Assassin’s Creed Shadows Switch 2 Port Plagued By Frequent Crashes

Assassin’s Creed Shadows just launched on Nintendo Switch 2, and while early reports have been reasonably positive on the port’s performance, it seems some players are having a far worse time than initial experiences would have suggested. The port holds a pretty decent 81 on Metacritic, but a non-trivial number of folks are hitting crash after crash. Which is, in fact, the last thing you want your shiny new video game to be doing to you.

Reddit’s got it bad, as it bursts at the seams a bit with dissatisfied customers who have, in some cases, endured enough shutdowns to set Shadows aside altogether until Ubisoft addresses the issue.

PS6, here we come?

Crashing Out

“No crashes for me for the first two hours,” one Redditor reports, “and then it crashed on me about five times in the span of ten minutes.” Ouch. They claim to only get up to two minutes before yet another crash strikes whenever they boot the Switch 2 port back up, though an odd little technique ultimately did the trick: “I had turned off the UI during that time, and when I turned it back on, the game ran fine.”

Now, if this was a one-size-fits-all temporary solution, that would be grand. But that’s just not what we’re hearing. As Nintendo Life notes, player statements are really rather scattered, with a blend of challenges and mixed solutions. (In many cases, there’s not been a solution at all.)

“After unlocking the blacksmith character I cannot play for longer than 60 seconds before the game crashes. Internal memory, docked mode.” -Gloomy-Detective-369

“Crashed 3x back to back to back after about 5hrs in,” SubstantialDealer959 chimes in. “It’s really starting to annoy me and break immersion. Ubisoft needs to fix this fast.” It’s worth combing through the Reddit thread below if you’re facing Assassin’s Creed Shadows crashes on Switch 2, yourself, but I want to emphasize here that the roots of the problem don’t seem to be the same for everybody.

Some fans have particularly heated things to say. “My game crashed 10 times in 20 minutes,” claims ApprehensiveLie8032, whose user name suggests the tiny possibility of a distinct lack of truthfulness, but I digress. “I couldn’t play. And the worst part is we paid for it and there’s nothing we can do; Ubisoft doesn’t care.”

stevenandthecg is (are?) taking aim at tech support, which to be clear, I don’t condone; I’m sure the majority of those folks are doing everything they can to assist. But maybe not all of them.

“Support is gaslighting me, saying that it is an issue with my console. Never had any issue with any other game.”

Kidikaros17’s got the thread’s top comment. This might not fix the crashes, but it’s worth looking into if you’re dealing with aggressive pop-in. “I just moved my game from my 512 GB Micro SD card onto the console. The pop-in is way less severe and the textures seem to load in faster. This is anecdotal still, but seems to make a difference to me.”

“And here I am without any crashes whatsoever and just enjoying myself,” 1malDoenerMitAlles happily proclaims from their perch at the eye of the storm. “Sometimes ignorance is bliss.” Well… I’m glad plenty of people are having a grand old time, at least…?
