Ubisoft hasn’t said much about Assassin’s Creed Hexe since it was first unveiled in 2022, but various reports and leaks indicate that it will be a return to roots sequel more linear than the sprawling RPGs we’ve grown accustomed to.
While that might sound promising, especially amid complaints of bloat with recent titles like Valhalla and Shadows, concerns are beginning to mount following yesterday’s news that creative director Clint Hocking (Watch Dogs: Legion, Far Cry 2) is stepping down from the project.
In response to these worries, Insider Gaming editor-in-chief Tom Henderson claimed that development is actually going well, and that Hexe is one of the most highly-anticipated projects within Ubisoft right now.
Assassin’s Creed Hexe is the one project everyone at Ubisoft wants to work on.
“Some folk will be wary of this change, but Assassin’s Creed Hexe is the one project everyone at Ubisoft wants to work on because of how good it’s shaping up to be,” Henderson posted on X.
What We Know About Assassin’s Creed Hexe So Far
It’s unclear why Hocking stepped down — whether it was prompted by the upheaval at Ubisoft or if he left the project of his own volition — but taking his place is Black Flag and Origins creative director Jean Guesdon.
“We sincerely thank [Hocking] for his vision, creative contributions, and dedication over the years, and we wish him the very best in his next chapter,” a spokesperson said. “The game will deliver something distinctive within the Assassin’s Creed franchise. We look forward to sharing more information in the future.”
Several reports allege that Hexe will take place in 16th century Germany at the height of the witch trials, with new protagonist Ella, who has supernatural powers, taking center stage. Lending to its setting, the game will reportedly build on the fear system from the Jack the Ripper DLC in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, though Ubisoft has not discussed any gameplay details as yet.
Ubisoft’s own Marc-Alexis Cote said that Hexe would be “a very different type of Assassin’s Creed game.”
Details are scarce right now, and it has been suggested that Hexe won’t launch until after the rumored Black Flag remake and Invictus multiplayer spin-off — i.e. 2027 at the earliest. So, it’ll be a while yet before we hear any official news on the game.
