Arc Raiders is primarily billed as a PvE extraction shooter, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be the occasional bit of unsportsmanlike PvP when you dive in. Being friendly versus being an absolute cretin has been a big point of contention among Arc Raiders fans ever since launch, as some swear that you should never shoot on sight, while others argue it’s a free-for-all and may the better man win.
It’s a compelling argument that has almost definitely contributed to the game’s rampant success over the past few months, with some adamant that the threat of running into a trigger-happy Raider adds to the overall tension of the game. However, it seems developer Embark Studios has no plans to actually cater to the game’s more PvP-focused player base.
Arc Raiders Boss Shoots Down Requests For A PvP Leaderboard
In a recent interview with GamesBeat (thanks PC Gamer), Embark Studios CEO Patrick Söderlund talks a little bit about calls from certain players for something like a PvP leaderboard to acknowledge who is the deadliest of Raiders out there at the moment. In his eyes, Arc Raiders is a better game without those kinds of things, as it “isn’t about shooting other players” and they would naturally push more people towards the PvP side of the game.
“One of the beauties of this game is the fact that we don’t have those leaderboards, and it’s not competitive,” says Söderlund. “We don’t necessarily want to foster that kind of gameplay. The game isn’t about shooting other players. You can do that if you want to, but the ethos of the game has never been to go in and shoot players.”
Söderlund goes on to explain that Embark does want PvP in Arc Raiders to a certain extent, agreeing with fans that those elements are “a part that we use to craft tension.” However, actually giving those that go on a rampage and shoot on sight a target to aim for doesn’t seem like something Embark is willing to put in the game at the moment.
Personally, I like the idea of some kind of bounty system that would make PvP and stabbing people in the back riskier, while also giving those who enjoy the PvP side of the game something to actually do in the name of good. It would undoubtedly push more people into PvP though, and judging from Söderlund’s comments, that’s not the direction Embark wants to take Arc Raiders any time soon.
