Amazon’s New Kindle Scribe and Scribe Colorsoft Finally Have a Release Date

Amazon has confirmed that the new Kindle Scribe and Kindle Scribe Colorsoft will go on sale starting Dec. 10.

Both ereaders were announced in September, but Amazon didn’t confirm a release date until this week. The company has now updated the product pages for both models to show their upcoming availability. However, Amazon isn’t taking any preorders, meaning customers will have to place their orders directly on the site next week.

While the regular Kindle models offer distraction-free reading, the Kindle Scribes go a step further and allow you to write directly on the screen. The first Kindle Scribe came out in 2022, an update was released in 2024, and the tablet coming out next week is the third iteration of the device.

The new Kindle Scribe is bigger and thinner than its predecessor. The screen goes from 10.2 inches to 11 inches, while the thickness goes down from 5.7 mm to 5.4 mm. It also gets a quad-core chip, increased memory, and a snappier display.

It comes in two variants: a front-light model priced at $499.99 and a non front-light model priced at $429.99. The front-light variant becomes available on Dec. 10, while the other one will be rolling out early next year.

Amazon’s September announcement also revealed a color variant of the Scribe, called Scribe Colorsoft. At $629.99, the Colorsoft comes with a rendering engine that “enhances the color and ensures writing is fast, fluid, and totally natural,” Amazon says.

All new Scribe models come with an accompanying pen, which supports 10 colors for writing and five for highlighting. The pen also gets a new shader tool to help artists “create smooth gradients and subtle tones.”

With support for Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, you can easily import documents for markup and export annotated PDFs. The revamped Home page, on the other hand, gets Quick Notes for jotting down on a blank canvas as well as a way to open recently visited books, docs, and notebooks.

Unsurprisingly, the new Scribes also pack a bunch of AI features. You can run AI-powered searches on your documents, ask for AI-generated summaries, and add follow-up questions. Next year, you’ll also be able to send your notes and documents to Alexa+ and have a conversation about them.

Other upcoming features include Story So Far and Ask this Book. As their names suggest, Story So Far gives you a recap of everything you’ve read so far in a book, while Ask this Book lets you highlight a passage and ask questions about a character or a scene to receive spoiler-free answers.
