An overhauled, updated version of Rocket League will run on Unreal Engine 6, as announced at an esports event in Paris earlier today.
To reiterate: that’s Unreal Engine 6 – the next iteration in Epic’s game engine.
We’re still waiting for details of what the new technology will entail, but a graphic at the end of the trailer shows a metaverse-style splash screen, also featuring Fortnite and LEGO Fortnite. Presumably they’ll be ported to Unreal Engine 6 as well.
Epic owns Psyonix, the makers of Rocket League, so it makes sense it’d get early access to the technology. This does not look like a sequel to the soccer-style game; it’s the existing version running on Unreal Engine 6.
You can see from the footage that the visuals look significantly improved, with enhanced lighting and reflections on the car models. The grass details also look better.
My initial reaction was: is this a glimpse of PS6? Remember, Epic famously used PS5 hardware to debut Unreal Engine 5 before the new console launched.
Of course, Unreal Engine has always been developed with scalability in mind, so it’s possible it may also run on PS5.
I’ll update this article once Epic reveals more about the engine itself, but for now you can get a look at the improved version of Rocket League in the trailer above.
