A big budget Dungeons & Dragons project that was announced around this time last year has been canned, according to a report from Bloomberg.
This thing was a single-player action adventure game, spearheaded by Stig Asmussen — the veteran developer who directed God of War 3, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. You have to assume that this project had real potential.
So why was Asmussen and his team at Giant Skull — which he founded last year — cut from entertainment juggernaut Hasbro’s plans?
Well, in a nutshell, it sounds like the company was keen to lower costs. Despite having greenlit this D&D title, further assessment had convinced Hasbro and its subsidiary Wizards of the Coast to shut it down, having already taken measures to reorganise the company elsewhere.
A Wizards spokesperson stated: “While we decided not to pursue an early concept from Giant Skull, we have great respect for Stig Asmussen and his team and value our ongoing relationship.”
I’m left wondering what Giant Skull will do next. If it was able to bag such a big project right off the bat, then it’s easy to imagine that the independent studio’s next outing will be pretty sizeable as well.
Ultimately, it’s just a shame that we didn’t get to see this one in action.
It’s also worth mentioning that Wizards of the Coast has other video game projects in the works. Most notably, it’s publishing the Mass Effect-like Exodus, which is targeting a 2027 release on PS5.
