A new PlayStation patent filed in 2023 but made public this month reveals a new AI assisted technology that would generate highlight reels based on your gameplay.
As spotted by MP1st, the proposed system will monitor and analyse your gameplay, looking for key milestone moments like boss fights or high scores.
It’ll then use AI to understand your playstyle and learn which feats matter most.
For example, if you’re not a particularly good Call of Duty player, then a game-winning double kill would become “highlight worthy”, and be captured as such. But for a player who’s regularly pulling off double kills, it may not be recorded with the same level of importance.
The idea of the patent is to streamline the gameplay capture functions of future PlayStation hardware, which have been a mainstay since the Share button was introduced with the PS4.
The document notes that right now players have to manually record their highlights, and then edit them afterwards.
The writing here suggests video packages and posters could be automatically generated using a combination of videos and screenshots, meaning they’d be immediately shareable online.
The idea is to highlight gameplay feats unique to each player, in accordance with their typical capabilities and performance.
Think of this like a kind of Spotify Wrapped but for your gameplay sessions, personalised based on your individual achievements.
Personally, we don’t think it’s a bad idea, and there is inherent value for Sony here: those viral moments, when shared, would all serve as promotion for the PlayStation platform.
But it’s worth remembering patents like this rarely evolve into real-world products, so while it’s a neat idea, don’t expect it to make its way into the PS6 at launch.
