Sony today revealed during its final quarterly results for fiscal year 2025 that total PS5 console shipments have reached 93.7 million units. This means a further 1.5 million PS5 units were sold during the fourth quarter (start of January 2026 — end of March 2026), but this is a considerable drop compared to the same time period in the last fiscal year.
In Q4 of fiscal year 2024, there were 2.8 million PS5 shipments, meaning the past three months of sales at the start of 2026 have dropped by nearly 50%. In total, the entire 2025 fiscal year saw 16 million PS5 console shipments, which is another slight decrease on the previous one — fiscal year 2024 saw 18.5 million PS5 shipments.
Sony is now in the back half of the PS5 console generation, so a dip in sales compared to its peak years is expected to some degree. However, in past generations, price cuts have made PlayStation systems an easier purchase for families. This time, the PS5 is going up in price.
The recent PS5 price increases came into effect after the conclusion of the fiscal year’s fourth quarter, so the slow down in sales can’t be attributed to that decision. If anything, the news would have actually boosted today’s numbers as potential PS5 owners rushed to buy a base PS5 or PS5 Pro before the price hikes came into effect.
We saw this in the final days before the price increases went live as the PS5 Pro sold out at select retailers just prior to a $150 price hike.
Looking ahead, Sony plans to “base our PlayStation 5 hardware sales in fiscal year 2026 on the volume of memory we can procure at reasonable prices and we expect hardware profitability to be essentially the same as fiscal year 2025”.
