April ends for HBO Max with the addition of one of the most critically acclaimed movies of last year, Marty Supreme, along with a CNN deep dive into FBI scandals, a few 1930s classics, and some popular Food Network competitions. We’ve got a rundown of everything new streaming below.
This Week on HBO Max: PCMag’s Picks
Marty Supreme (April 24)
It’s an impossible task to sum up Marty Supreme in just a few sentences, but we’ll give it a shot. Timothée Chalamet plays the title character, a ping-pong obsessed hustler from Brooklyn who is out to prove he’s the best in the world, but his loose nature with both money and women brings him into confrontations with people holding much bigger paddles. It’s riotously funny, disturbing, and oddly sweet, with top-tier performances from a cast that includes Hollywood royalty like Gwyneth Paltrow, plus Tyler, the Creator and Kevin O’Leary from Shark Tank.
Confessions of a Nazi Spy (April 25)
One of the most underrated aspects of an HBO Max subscription is the service’s massive library of classic films. While most other streamers don’t really respect Hollywood history, HBO Max has a fantastic array of both all-time classics and lesser-known movies from the last century. April 25 sees the addition of three excellent dramas, most notably 1939’s Confessions of a Nazi Spy, the first anti-Reich movie made by a Hollywood studio. Edward G. Robinson plays an FBI agent tracking down a malcontent turned informant for the Axis.
Standoff: The FBI, Power and Paranoia – Season 1 (April 28)
The current FBI director, Kash Patel, is in the headlines over allegations that he’s often tanked at work. It’s great timing for the new CNN docuseries Standoff: The FBI, Power, and Paranoia, which examines the contentious relationships the president has had with the heads of our domestic spying infrastructure, from Nixon’s clashes with J. Edgar Hoover to the modern day.
