Among Us was first released in 2018, but it didn’t rise to prominence until 2020. As the world locked down due to the COVID pandemic, friends around the globe sought ways to connect, and Among Us was the perfect platform: a social deduction game in which you and your pals could hang out, catch up, and have a laugh.
While the game has never quite hit the heights it did in 2020, when almost half a million people were playing at the same time, it’s still going strong six years later, as evidenced by its latest milestone: One billion (!!) downloads.
Among Us Really Is One Of The Biggest Games On The Planet
One billion is a huge number. It’s one thousand million. It’s one-eighth of Planet Earth’s population. And it’s the number of downloads Among Us has hit on Android devices alone. It’s a staggering feat, and one not many games will ever manage to achieve. Even Grand Theft Auto 5, one of the best-selling games to have ever existed, has only sold 225 million units. Granted, its platforms are far more limited, but it shows the levels that Among Us has achieved.
The news was shared on the game’s official social media channels, with the message saying, “yooooooooooooooo we recently hit 1 BILLION downloads on the @GooglePlay store???” Before it got a little more unhinged, stating, “that’s so many Crewmates… thank u for playing… i’m gonna barf in a vent this is so cool…”
These numbers alone are mind-blowing, but they don’t even factor in the other platforms on which Among Us is available. If Apple devices is even 50 percent of Android, that’s another 500 million. You then have the estimated 32 million sales it’s received on Steam, plus all of its console and VR sales.
Among Us developer Innersloth puts many of Among Us’s funds to good use through its indie publishing label, Outersloth, which helps indie developers release their games.
Of course, this is downloads, not purchases, so people will absolutely have downloaded the game multiple times, but that doesn’t detract from the fact that there have been over one billion of them. Among Us has definitely earned its place in the pantheon of video game greats.
