Windrose does not believe in short commutes. One minute you are learning the basics on a starter beach, and the next you are staring out at a map full of islands that all feel just a little too far away. Sailing everywhere has its charm at first, but it does not take long before you start wondering if there is a faster way to get around without spending half your play session on open water.
Good news: there is, but it is not something the game hands you right away. You will need to explore and unlock a few things before the ocean starts feeling a lot smaller. Here is how fast travel works in Windrose and how to set it up for yourself.
Windrose is currently in early access, so the information in this guide may change over time.
How To Unlock And Use Fast Travel
Fast travel becomes available during the early main quest ‘How My Shore Adventure Began’ after you learn how to smelt Copper Ingots. At this point, you unlock the Fast Travel Bell, which is the item used to build the system.
You can get a Fast Travel Bell either by finding one or crafting it. One of the earliest ways is through a Smuggler’s Cache near your starting beach. It is hidden underground behind debris, and once you clear it and defeat the enemy inside, you can open a chest that contains a Bell and unlocks the recipe. You may also find Bells in chests around shipwrecks while exploring.
If you are crafting it instead, you will need 10 Copper Ingots and 3 Rope, made at a Workbench using Copper Ore (found in caves) and Plant Fiber.
The bell is not used on its own. It is placed into a Fast Travel Point, which you build through the construction menu (by pressing ‘B’). Each Fast Travel Point costs 20 Wood and one Fast Travel Bell, and it must be placed near water, like a shoreline or dock area.
To use fast travel, you need at least two Fast Travel Points set in different locations. Once you have them, you can travel between them freely.
If you are on your ship, you can also open the map and instantly travel to any unlocked point, as long as you are not in combat or being chased.
