It’s been a while since we’ve last heard anything about the Metro first-person shooter survival horror video games that are based on the novels by Dmitry Glukhovsky. Beyond a VR spin-off entry titled Metro Awakening, the last real Metro title was Metro Exodus all the way back in 2019.
If rumors are to be believed, we’re about to learn more about the next Metro game extremely soon.
Initially, AlexandreNGamR took to social media to share that “a new Metro game should be announced next week.”
Then, reliable insider NateTheHate corroborated that rumor by noting that it was true.
If that wasn’t enough confirmation, another reliable insider, Jez Corden, revealed that the title is named Metro 2039, and that it’s coming “soon.”
However, that’s not the only significant bit of Metro-related news in the ether. Because just as word began spreading of an imminent reveal for the next Metro title, a supposed cancelled build of said title has made its way onto the web.

Undead Labs is finally delving deep into the production of State of Decay 3.
It’s Unclear How Much Of This Build Will Make It Into The Final Product, If Anything At All
Over on the Metro subreddit, a user shared a screenshot as well as details about a now-canceled version of Metro 4 that dates back to 2022.
There, they noted that the game was about Hunter, was fully open world and had a full crafting system for ammo types and more.
The leaks don’t stop there, though, as someone shared supposed cutscenes of Metro 2039. They are unlisted videos on YouTube and seem to carry over the fact that Artyom is not the protagonist of this title.
That there is a new Metro game in development isn’t exactly “new” news. As recently as a year ago, 4A Games, the developer behind Metro, shared that it was hard at work on the next title in the franchise. What’s more, in a blog post they outlined that the game will draw on the experiences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“As art became life for many of our developers in Ukraine, we drew from that lived experience to create an even darker story, those themes already present in Metro becoming ever more apparent and important,” the studio wrote.
To this point, what wasn’t known was the title or just how the game would function. It seems we’re closer than ever to finding out.
