Double battles are the standard VGC format you’re probably used to if you’ve ever watched competitive Pokemon play. There are Pokemon that are built to be partners that do well in double battles. Several Pokemon are great for support, while others are perfect for setups.
With the right combinations in Pokemon Champions, you can make unstoppable Pokemon setups that’ll have your opponent begging for mercy when they see your party lineup. Of course, this all depends on the type of teams you’re attempting to create in the end. Despite which team you want to build for, every Pokemon here is a solid choice for double battles.
Garchomp
Not only is Garchomp great for single battles, but it’s also very good for double battles as well. With access to AoE moves like Earthquake that’ll deal decent damage to both opponents, and Outrage that’ll have Garchomp lashing out for a 120 power move against a random opponent, and you can sweep both enemies on the opposing team, as it’s a consistent attack that most opponents can’t survive.
With moves like Swords Dance to make Garchomp even more powerful and Rock Tomb to slow down opponents, pair Garchomp with anything that won’t be affected by Earthquake, and you’ve got a good partner.

Charizard
Charizard has great coverage, and with both X and Y options for Mega Evolution, it has enough variety to fit in whatever team you’re trying to build. Set up harsh sunlight to take advantage of the speed and power of Charizard, and blast enemies with the Grass-type Solar Beam during harsh sunlight on the same turn, and destroy any Water-type Pokemon in your way.
Pair Charizard with a partner who can set up and take advantage of the weather options, and you can manipulate the battle to your preference. Burn the enemy, lower the stats of opponents, and make room for your partner Pokemon, all at the same time.
Primarina
Another Pokemon with a decent set of AoE attacks at its disposal, Primarina also has the Fairy-type, helping to deal with the Dragon-type Pokemon that are pretty popular, making her a great addition in double battles.
Escape moves like Flip Turn also set you up for an easy way to swap out, and Hyper Voice and Surf, alongside Dazzling Gleam, will hit everyone on the enemy team all at once. You can play with your opponent’s stats as well, making it easier for your partner Pokemon to follow up.
Corviknight
Corviknight is very scary on its own, and in a double battle, it has some essential moves that’ll keep it threatening the enemy team. Taunt will force the enemy to only use one attack, potentially protecting Croviknight and its partner, for example.
Corviknight can self-restore with Roost, and has a large variety of move types, so it can most likely cover any weakness its partner might have. U-Turn is a great setup move in double battles, and a staple for most Corviknight teams.
Excadrill
Excadrill has several AoE move options that work really well in a double battle setup. Earthquake is a staple, and moves like Iron Head can help cause one of the two enemies you’re facing to flinch, giving you an advantage. Give Excadrill an accuracy boost from its partner to OHKO with Horn Drill, and set up Excadrill with Swords Dance or the enemy with Stealth Rock to help amnipulate the battlefield.
With Sand Rush and Sand Force as abilities, a partner who can make a sandstorm for free is the perfect addition to a double battle with Excadrill, making it move faster or making it stronger.
Froslass
A great option if you’re looking to mega evolve and one of the new Ice-type Pokemon available to do so, Froslass, like some of the others, has an AoE option in Blizzard. Already being extremely strong, other moves such as Shadow Ball and Destiny Bond can help clear out opponents.
Aurora Veil is a great setup for double battles, decreasing the damage taken from physical and special moves by 1/3 for everyone on your side of the team. You can setup a blizzard, make use of your abilities, attack both enemies and defend your team, and even mega evolve as well with Froslass in double battles.
Mimikyu
Mimikyu is a great double battle contender, as its Disguise ability ensures it won’t be destroyed immediately. This allows oyu to setup for your team, including dropping Trick Room if you’re running a slow but powerful build. While most of its attacks are single target, you can get powerful Fairy and Ghost-type physical-type moves that’ll deal a surprising amount of damage.
These physical moves will get around the resistances built up to these with special moves, giving you a chance to take down the enemy after some setup, pairing well with a special attacker.
Whimsicott
Whimsicott comes in as the ultimate support Pokemon. Bulky enough to survive with a kit that has tons of setup, you’ll want ot have one on your team for exactly that purpose. You’ve got Tailwind to help your team outspeed the opponent, and Sunny Day for the perfect weather setup with a partner that can capitalize.
Whimsicott comes with several utility options to help dampen the damage your team takes, taunt the enemy, use Encore to force their hand, or use Helping Hand to make its partner’s attacks stronger. It’s truly the perfect double battle Pokemon.
Gengar
With a Mega Evolution available to you, Gengar is a good option for double battles if you’re looking for a mega to add to your team. Your Sludge Wave will hit all Pokemon with a small percentage chance to poison. Destiny Bond ensures that if Gengar goes down, one of your opponents’ Pokemon will as well, evening the double battle playing field.
Icy Wind is another option for some decent AoE damage but mostly to lower the Speed of both your opponents. Gengar just has a lot of utility to hit multiple enemies and keep the playing field even, making it a great double battle option.
