Which Character Should You Pick In Cinderia?

Cinderia is a roguelike that pulls heavily from its contemporaries, though with a wonderful storybook aesthetic that helps it stand out amongst them. It also has multiple playable characters to keep things fresh.

At present, the game has four different playable characters, all with their own unique Skills, Abilities, and movesets. Learning how to play all of them is hard enough. But you’re going to have to unlock them first.

With Cinderia being in Early Access, much of what is mentioned here is very much subject to change.

At the moment, there are four different playable characters for you to unlock and play as. Rue is given to you by default, while Rivet, Uma, and Isdra must all be unlocked.

While all of the Skills and Abilities are unique to every character, they can all use the same Accessories and Support Skills, and any permanent upgrades, such as those from the Soulfire Prayer, are shared, saving you from having to upgrade all four characters separately.

How To Unlock Every Character

Every character that can be unlocked has unique conditions, so there’s not strictly a guaranteed order in which you will unlock them, though you will more than likely unlock them in the order of Rue, Rivet, Uma, and then Isdra.

To change the character you play as, simply talk to them in the Shelter. You can’t change in the middle of a run, so try not to accidentally start one while playing as the unintended character. Here’s how to unlock each of them:

Rue

Technically, you do not unlock Rue, as she is the character given to you by default. There’s nothing else to it other than that.

Rivet

Rivet is likely to be the second character you end up unlocking. She is a relative of the Blacksmith you rescue early in the game. After having helped him establish his forge, he will mention his missing relative.

Once he says this, there is a high chance that you will randomly encounter Rivet in a room of the first area of the game. The room she appears in is random, and she will help you fight any enemies that appear in the room.

Speak to her after beating the enemies in the room, and she’ll be transported back to the Shelter, and is playable as soon as you next speak to her.

Uma

Uma works a little differently, and requires more work to unlock. She is encountered in the second area of the game, the Lightless Forest. Specifically, she is found in one of the Mystery Rooms, which also means you can’t guarantee a meeting with her.

In her Mystery room, she will always be alongside another person, as well as an injured animal. She will ask for five Equipment Material shards to help heal the animal, and will then offer you a choice of rewards.

After meeting and offering her the shards three times, she will choose to fight against the curse on the forest, and returns to the Shelter. She then becomes a playable character.

You can meet Uma as any of the characters. As long as you help her a total of three times cumulatively, she will become a playable character herself

Isdra

In a sense, Isdra has the least explicit conditions for her unlock, though you do have to put in the most effort towards grinding.

To unlock Isdra, you must have first brought the witch back to the Shelter. She appears in the first area of the game after you’ve built the Blacksmith’s forge. After bringing her back to the Shelter, you must then build her research station.

After this, you must then spend your Candles to unlock more research topics at the research station. You must do so until the Ancient Ice Magic Research III topic is unlocked. After researching this, Isdra immediately appears and can be played as.

How To Play As Every Character

While the fundamentals remain the same across all characters, the way they use them, and the very upgrades available to them, are all entirely different.

Rue

Rue is easily the fastest of all the playable characters. She comes with a five-hit combo string by default, and has knives she can throw out at high speed. She also typically has faster cooldowns on her Skills by default, though they also require Energy to be cast.

The amount of Energy Rue has also impacts some Skills, making them last longer or become more powerful the more Energy she has. Energy is restored passively, as well as when you deal damage to enemies.

Rue will not always be dealing the highest damage, but the versatility she affords both up-close and at-range makes her a great all-rounder.

Rivet

Rivet is a much more technical character than most others who relies on a lot of resource management. She has a three-hit combo string with quite a short range, though it can deal decent damage.

Her ranged attack is a gun that holds multiple rounds. The gun automatically reloads when emptied, and Rivet has an unlimited source of this. Reloading also does not interrupt any of your actions.

Many of Rivet’s Skill and Upgrades change how her combo works, and much of them also allow you to construct and upgrade turrets. As such, much of Rivet’s gameplay is focused on running multiple turrets and playing mainly at range and skirting around the arena a lot.

Uma

A bit like Rivet, Uma relies on a lot of resource management, though in quite a different way. She is something of a Beastmaster, able to summon a variety of Woodland spirits to support her in combat.

Her combo string is short, while her ranged attack fires off a nature blast. This has three charges, which go into cooldown after all have been used.

Uma’s main resource is her Summon gauge. As she deals damage, she generates a certain amount of Summon. Many of her Skills use up Summon to be cast, which typically also summons an animal to help you. When the Summon gauge reaches 100, it summons a wolf and resets back to 0.

In this way, the goal with Uma is to summon as many animals as possible to help boost her damage. A ring appears around Uma when an animal is summoned, which is the area in which they will attack.

Isdra

Isdra is one of the most unusual of the characters. She has a longer combo string than the other characters except for Rue, but is also the only one not to have a ranged attack by default. Instead, she has a block that can guard against all the damage in the direction she faces.

One of the most unique aspects of Isdra is her ability to Perfect Parry. This can be achieved in three ways – the third hit of her default combo string, by timing her block with an enemy’s attack, and with her Dash. With a Perfect Parry, Isdra negates all damage to herself, as well as reflecting back a massive amount of damage at the enemy itself.

Isdra also has the Frost Gauge. This builds up with some of Isdra’s attacks, whether or not they land, but also drops passively. The higher the Frost Gauge, the more powerful many of her attacks become.
