Papers, Please Developer Worries His In-Development Projects Will Be “Slurped By AI”

Papers, Please and Return of the Obra Dinn developer Lucas Pope recently had an interview with Mike Rose and Rami Ismail of ‘Mike & Rami Are Still Here’ where he spoke about his creative process, and his thoughts on the gaming industry.

Pope raised an interesting point about how his feelings around sharing snippets of in-development projects have changed, because you now risk your work being stolen by limited language models (LLM) or other people using the technology.

AI Has Made Sharing Early Work Dangerous

“I don’t get to the point where it’s done that much,” Pope says, reflecting on his unfinished projects. “I do have this kind of curse that I really want to finish things, actually. I’m very production-focused in the sense that I want the production to work. I want it to be efficient. I want it to finish. I want to actually produce something at the end.”

As much as everyone enjoys the process, a lot of creatives and artists would rather show something to the public at the end of their respective ordeals.

“But I also like to talk about the stuff I’m working on, and I think just now the situation kind of feels different to me, that you don’t really talk about stuff when you’re working on it because I don’t know it’s going to get slurped up by AI, or people are going to copy it or something else like that,” he continues.

Akihiro Hino says developers need to maintain their eye for aesthetics.

“I mean, it’s not a hard rule. It’s just, I got the kind of feeling about that, and I just didn’t feel as comfortable talking about the stuff I was working on again. So I hope that sort of breaks and I can feel comfortable talking about the stuff I’m working on,” Pope added.

The legislation surrounding artificial intelligence isn’t very robust, and we’ve seen very clear examples of artists’ work being plagiarised by image generation. The LLMs are trained on existing work, which, morally speaking, is theft.

Pope is also worried about disappointing fans of his, as he was relatively satisfied with Papers, Please and Return of the Obra Dinn: “Do I really want to go out on a high note? Why drag myself down with the next thing that people may not like?”

It’s a constant psychological battle for creatives who have to balance their own creative ambitions with the reputation they’ve built up over the years.
