Marvel Rivals’ new map, Lower Manhattan, is pretty neat. It’s full of nods to the characters and their source material – including a poster that seems to compare Kingpin to Donald Trump. But alas, some players argue that some of the most important details in the map are just downright wrong.
According to some fans in the Marvel Rivals subreddit, the surrounding area of the Lower Manhattan map would suggest that it isn’t based in Manhattan at all. In fact, they believe the map is actually based in New Jersey, judging by the direction of the Statue of Liberty in the background.
Lower Manhattan Might Not Be In Manhattan At All In Marvel Rivals
The evidence is outlined in this Reddit post, and yeah, it’s pretty hard to argue with.
“Since the One World Trade Center is positioned in the background, that means the map is not set in Manhattan at all but in New Jersey,” says Reddit user saldeti. “With the distance from the Statue of Liberty, that places the map actually in what would be the real-life Greenville Yards; not Manhattan at all. Is this an oversight or something?”
The replies are full of joke answers about how this came to be, like the Statue of Liberty being built in a different location, or New York having ownership of New Jersey, in the Marvel Rivals universe. However, I think one theory beats them all.
“The devs are just giving Americans a taste of our own medicine,” says The_Real_Remy_Lebeau. “This is exactly what Asian countries experience pretty much any time Western media tries to depict an Eastern city.”
True enough, the approach taken with Lower Manhattan is one that prioritises New York-esque motifs over anything else. We non-New Yorkers would expect to see the Statue of Liberty somewhere on the map, and not really care where it lines up with its real-world location. Sorry, it got dumbed down for us, I guess.
This is far from the only mistake made in Marvel Rivals. While it’s gotten better in recent seasons, we would occasionally see slip-ups, such as spelling errors, made with new skins.
