I Am Jesus Christ Debuts To Very Positive Reviews On Steam

Any retelling of the life and times of Jesus Christ is ripe for controversy as, no matter how you depict it, there will almost certainly be people who aren’t fans of how it’s framed. That’s why I expected I Am Jesus Christ to be bombarded with negative reviews when it launched just in time for Easter weekend, but it seems Space Boat Studios has nailed the assignment.

I Am Jesus Christ hasn’t had the highest player count during its launch weekend. It peaked at 472 players on Good Friday, which is rather fitting. However, most of those who have put themselves in the virtual sandals of our Lord and savior have really enjoyed the video game version of Jesus’s life.

The game currently has a rating of Very Positive on Steam, with 86 percent of the 533 players who have left a review having glowing things to say about it. While some of the reviews are seemingly poking fun at the game and its concept, most appear sincere, with more people than you might suspect having wanted an RPG where you can play through the life of Jesus.

Codex Mortis is available to play in Early Access now, but it’s not generating a lot of interest.

What Are People Saying About I Am Jesus Christ?

“The narrative is what really shines here. This game makes you really feel the story of Jesus. This work shines as an interactive experience,” writes one player in their review. “This is definitely a great way for someone who wants a fun interactive way to learn about Jesus,” another reviews reads, noting that, having grown up a Catholic, they wish something like I Am Jesus Christ to teach them about the bible when they were a moody kid who found those teachings boring.

Not only is it a hit with the religious gamers at which it’s aimed, but there are positive notes about its gameplay mentioned throughout the hundreds of positive reviews, too. As you play through Jesus’s life, you help people, perform miracles, and see significant moments in his life through his eyes. There is seemingly a faith meter connected to that, and I’ve come across multiple mentions of Assassin’s Creed-like parkour elements in the game. I don’t remember ever reading that in the bible. Maybe I skipped that chapter.

Even though it failed to break 500 concurrent players at launch, it will be interesting to see how this game is used over a longer period. Some believe it can be a legitimate way to teach people about Jesus and Christianity. If others, particularly non-gamers, agree, we might see this being played for years and potentially even used as a tool to teach young people about Christianity.
