Pokemon Colosseum For Switch 2 Was Announced A Full Year Ago

It might be hard to believe, but exactly one year ago, Nintendo held its big blowout Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, where the console was shown off, along with some games, as well as the announcement that GameCube games would finally be playable via the Nintendo Classics program available to Nintendo Switch Online members.

There, a smattering of titles were teased, chief among them Pokemon Colosseum and its sequel, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, two of the most beloved GameCube titles that are also two of its most expensive to purchase these days.

However, a year later, and Pokemon fans are still waiting for Colosseum to drop on Nintendo Classics. There’s no word when it’ll drop, but it wasn’t until very recently that XD: Gale of Darkness did finally drop, so that tells you the kind of timeline we’re dealing with.

Ditto from Pokemon Pokopia wearing a crown against a Monster Hunter Stories 3 backdrop.

At This Point, Should We Even Be Surprised That Spin-Offs Have Become King?

Spin-offs are breaking records and capturing hearts, with games like Pokemon Pokopia and Monster Hunter Stories 3 showing they can stand tall with the biggest titles.

So when will it come? Your guess is as good as mine.

The GameCube Classics Program Has Been All Over The Place

Unlike the glory days of Virtual Console, where, seemingly every day, there was a new classic title available, the GameCube Classics program has been particularly slow with its rollout.

After the addition of XD: Gale of Darkness, just two titles (Super Mario Sunshine and Pokemon Colosseum) remain from the initial reveal a year ago that haven’t been added to the program. An unannounced title in the form of Wario World did make it to the service, so Nintendo really is just operating how they normally do.

It’s not like Pokemon Home compatibility is going to come with Colosseum, as it didn’t with XD: Gale of Darkness, so really there’s no reason for the delay.

If there is one saving grace to all this, it’s the fact that this is the 30th anniversary of Pokemon as a franchise. Already, Nintendo has pulled out several stops, including a rather shocking re-release of FireRed and LeafGreen. Not only were those titles ported to modern hardware, but they were available as standalone purchases and had Pokemon Home compatibility.

Evidence from FireRed and LeafGreen suggests that this might not be the only classic title to be available on modern hardware, either. Given that we have just entered April, aka the fourth month of the year, and there are eight more months remaining, there’s good reason to believe it’ll come within that timeframe.

After all, with Winds and Waves, the recently-revealed Gen 10 title, not coming until 2027 and Legends: Z-A already having released its DLC, there is a major title lacking later in the year.

Still, it is a bit shocking to think we’ve made it a whole year and are still wondering when the heck Colosseum is coming.
