It’s been ten years since Nathan Drake took players on an emotionally-charged journey in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, which served as the cap-off to a swashbuckling treasure hunter’s four-chapter journey. Lost Legacy, an Uncharted 4 spinoff starring two separate characters, has been around for nearly as long.
Some might say it’s high time for a comeback. Others are totally satiated with Nate’s poignant conclusion. No matter which side of the aisle you’re on, you probably didn’t expect our boy’s return to be “we have Resident Evil at home,” and frankly, I very much doubt that Sony foresaw it, either.
No, Er, Yeah, That’s Definitely You, Nate
Enter… 28 Floors: Outbreak. Does that sound sort’ve like 28 Days Later? Great! It probably is, so let’s click purchase. Does it look like Resident Evil? Great! It probably is, so let’s click purchase. Oh, clever consumer, were you not duped by either of the aforementioned little swindles? Here’s one more. Isn’t that Nathan Drake from Naughty Dog’s highly successful Uncharted franchise? Great! It probably is, so let’s click purchase.
At least, that’s the only thing I can imagine was going through studio Witenovastudio OÜ’s minds when they unveiled this thing. 28 Floors: Outbreak is available to wishlist right now, on PlayStation Network, because the devs clearly never read the one about Icarus and the sun. The screenshots mainly sport the protagonist’s hands as he reaches out to do dramatic things like saving a scary-looking test sample (press x) or a wounded doctor (press circle), but the cover pic—the thing that everybody is going to see first—has Sir Francis Drake’s roguish descendant helping that aforementioned doctor down a horror-fueled hallway.
28 Floors: Outbreak also includes stunning images like the one seen above, which features the hero wrapping a pre-bloodied bandage around his wrist. You can really feel the passion. Over on ResetEra, folks are tearing Outbreak to pieces, and if you squint, you’ll find evidence of yours truly commenting on this disaster-in-the-making video game hours prior to my decision to actually write about it in a vaguely professional manner.
I’m not sure what Witenovastudio OÜ thinks it’s getting away with here. Sony shot down Lights of Motiram, a Horizon clone. Is the bet on the table that they won’t go after a game that looks nothing like Uncharted, save for the very blatantly ripped-off lead character? I guess? Maybe? Or are the devs truly bullish that PlayStation won’t bother protecting the image of one of the most historically important fictional figures in its several-decade history?
Uh, 28 Floors: Outbreak is, um, ostensibly due to launch in 2027. I wouldn’t bank on it, Nate.
A Year Later And Pokemon Fans Are Still Waiting On Colosseum For Switch 2
Instead, we got its sequel (XD: Gale of Darkness), which is just as confusing.
