Eidos-Montreal, a longstanding game studio, arguably most famous for its work on the Deus Ex franchise and its Tomb Raider reboot trilogy, has announced major sweeping layoffs.
In a statement shared on LinkedIn, it was revealed that the layoffs will impact 124 employees. What’s more, studio head David Anfossi is also departing.
The statement is as follows:
“Eidos Montréal is announcing a reduction in its workforce and the departure of Head of Studio, David Anfossi.
The reduction in workforce affecting 124 employees is a result of changing project needs and impacts across production and support teams. Today is a difficult day for our studio and reflects the need to adapt and concentrate efforts where Eidos-Montréal can be most effective.
We are deeply grateful to the team members impacted; this decision is not a reflection of their talent, dedication, or performance. Supporting those impacted with care and respect remains our priority, while ensuring continuity for the teams moving forward.
Also, after many years as Head of Studio, David Anfossi and Eidos Montréal are also parting ways. We thank David for his contributions and wish him the best in his future endeavors. A transition plan is underway, and further updates will be shared as new leadership is finalized.
Today, however, our priority is supporting our colleagues.”
It is the third round of layoffs to hit the studio, with a round in December impacting senior employees and a round last March that impacted 75 employees.

Battlefield 6 Studios Hit With Layoffs Despite Record-Breaking Launch Numbers
EA has reportedly laid off an unconfirmed number of Battlefield 6 staff from multiple studios as part of a “realignment” across the franchise.
Eidos Montreal Has Seemingly Struggled To Get A Project
Since releasing Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy in 2021, Eidos Montreal has seemingly struggled to land a long-term project. In the time since then, the studio has been outsourced to provide support to Grounded 2 and Fable.
Resumes that were made publicly available following December’s layoffs point to a number of canceled projects. Of the reported projects, the studio apparently tried to revive Deus Ex, going as far as to pitch it to partners and publishers, though no one seemed to bite on the revival.
Separately, it was reported that a Lord of the Rings game was canceled, one that would’ve involved Telltale-style story elements. Of note, Insider Gaming reported that an “AAAA” game was in development using Unreal Engine 5. It’s called P11, and it’s a new IP that’s been in development since 2019, with “hundreds of millions” of dollars invested.
It’s unclear how much Monday’s announced layoffs will impact the title.
