Final Fantasy 14’s Age Rating Goes Up In Japan Due To Gpose

Final Fantasy 14 means a great many things to a great many people. For some, it’s about simply enjoying the epic ongoing main story and the myriad characters. For others, it’s a raid haven where multiplayer frenzies can lead to lifetime friendships through shared hardships. Personally, I mostly just role-play on it, because yep, I’m one of them.

Whatever the case may be, “/gpose” is a perfect accompanying feature. It lets players make all sorts of cool, well, poses with their characters. It allows them to kind of turn their Warriors of Light into action figures, if you get what I mean? /gpose stands for “Group Pose,” which I suppose I’ll use for the rest of the article since it’s clearer and all. But what matters here is that Group Pose, as a concept, has prompted Square Enix to bump up FF14’s Japanese age rating. Here’s the deal.

Rating Up

First, here’s a full primer straight from Square Enix on what Group Pose even is. I’ll copy the whole thing from this page:

“Group Pose is a photo mode that allows you to take pictures of your character, party members, or friends at your command. With this mode enabled, you can pause motions, move the camera, adjust lighting, change colors with filters, and decorate the screen with frames and stickers. Even just using a filter or other design option adds an extra touch to your screenshots. Once you learn the basic functions of this mode, apply them in practice to create amazing screenshots!”

So, there you go. If you’re a “creative” enough thinker, you might be able to ascertain why this sort of thing could prompt CERO (Japanese game rating) concerns. What changed on CERO’s end? While that’s a bit murkier, here’s what SE’s got to say about the rating change, which goes into effect with Patch 7.5:

Currently, the “CERO C” rating necessitates restrictions on the Group Pose function. Therefore, to maintain the freedom of Group Pose and avoid these restrictions, we have decided to change the rating to “CERO D”.

CERO C, the current Final Fantasy 14 rating, is “suitable content for ages 15 and up.” CERO D changes that to “17 and up.” It’s not quite CERO Z, which is illegal for anyone below the age of 18 to even purchase, but it still marks a fairly sizable shift for FF14 after so many years of service.

Patch 7.5 is en route for an April 28, 2026 release.
