In the mainline Monster Hunter titles, any monster can be deadly, though later ones tend to be a bit more challenging. The same applies in Monster Hunter Stories 3, for both the monsters you battle, and the Monsties you fight alongside.
And so in that regard, cruel as it may sound, some Monsties are just a bit better than others. All of them can be made stronger of course, though that means the best of the bunch can, too.
Monstie Tier List Explanation
Before we get into the breaking down of which Monsties we feel are the best, it’s good to have an understanding of how we came to our conclusions. So here’s a quick explanation of each tier:
|
Tier |
Explanation |
|---|---|
|
S |
Monsties that off-the-bat are incredibly powerful with their default genes and high stat trends. |
|
A |
Monsties that, with a small amount of Gene adjusting, can be incredibly powerful. Also have good stat trends. |
|
B |
Monsties that require some Gene adjusting to really shine, and have more specific stat trends that work best in more niche scenarios. |
|
C |
Monsties that aren’t that great by default, and would need quite a bit of Gene adjusting to be viable. Also have low or very niche stat trends. |
|
D |
Monsties that don’t have many redeeming qualities outside of the early game, and are hard to make especially viable even with extensive Gene adjustments. |
Of course, you can make any Monstie good with enough Gene editing. But those at the top simply don’t need that to already be great, and the Rite of Channeling and Excursion will just make their gap even wider.
This Tier List is made without accounting for the various Dual-Element Monsties you can create, which there are far too many variations of to account for.

S Tier Monsties
These Monsties are the cream of the crop, which consequently also means most of them are not available until quite late into the game. All of them come with some of the highest collective stats in the game, and their default Skills and Genes are more than enough to survive almost every encounter.

|---|---|---|
|
