As we come to the end of the spoiler season for Riftbound’s upcoming set, Unleashed, we at TheGamer have been offered the opportunity to reveal one of the last cards coming in the next set.
If You Hit A Wall…
Vault Breaker is a 1 energy, 1 power Fury (Red) spell with the card text, “Action. Give a unit Assault 2 and Ganking this turn.” The card art depicts Vi holding up her hextech gauntlet, and the flavour text reads, “If you hit a wall, hit it hard!” which is one of her quotes from League of Legends.
Vault Breaker is one of ten common Fury cards arriving in Unleashed, and, considering Red has so many inexpensive ways to increase the might of its units already, is probably only valuable because it gives Ganking.
For example, in a situation where you’ve held a battlefield with a unit and your opponent conquered a battlefield on their turn, you could use Vault Breaker to move your readied unit from one battlefield to the other, scoring a point. It’s sort of like a situational, cheaper Ride the Wind, though obviously less versatile than the Chaos (Purple) card, since it can be used on your opponent’s turn to sneak a point.
The obvious synergy here is with Vi’s legend, Piltover Enforcer, which reads, “When you conquer, if you assigned 3 or more excess damage, you may exhaust me to ready a unit.” You can conquer a battlefield, tap Vi to ready your unit, play Vault Breaker and move the unit to the other battlefield to conquer that too. The intended synergy isn’t subtle, given the card features Vi and is named after one of her in-game abilities.
Riftbound’s Decentralised Rulings Are Hurting The Game
We shouldn’t have to dig through old Discord threads to understand interactions.
I think Vault Breaker could see play on very aggressive decks, which need to push tempo before they get “outscaled” by control decks. Though recycling a power in the early game can be costly, using Vault Breaker to score 3 points (conquer, gank, conquer and then hold) would make the power cost worth it. It’s an exciting time for aggro decks, which means it’s an exciting time for me personally.
We have another card to reveal tomorrow.
Unleashed releases in China on April 10 and globally on May 8. It is the final Riftbound set that will have a desynchronised release.
