In the lead-up to the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, there had been some out-sized hope that Nintendo would finally add some variation of Trophy/Achievement support to its console, allowing users to chart their victories the same way Xbox and PlayStation do.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case, and though Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom do have some sort of completion goals list, the fact remains there are still no Trophies or Achievements on a Nintendo console, for better or for worse.
“Nope,” vice president of player and product experience Bill Trinen said back then when asked if the Switch 2 will finally have the feature.

Nintendo Is Right To Reject Achievements
The Switch 2 is keeping the focus on the actual games.
No mind, then. RetroAchievements has taken the hard work out of Nintendo’s hands and has added support for the Wii, Nintendo’s seventh-generation console that is now officially 20 years old.
The end result is a plethora of digital milestones you can unlock for some of the Wii’s best games.
“Wii are extremely happy to welcome you to our biggest rollout ever with over 180 sets! RetroAchievements is proud to announce support for our 53rd console, the Nintendo Wii!” the forum wrote in a post.
It’d been two years since the last major rollout, which, coincidentally, was the GameCube, and now the Wii has support on the popular online platform, with over 180 sets being available.
Those sets range from Donkey Kong Barrel Blast to Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 to Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and yes, Mario Kart Wii.
“This makes Mii very happy,” one user wrote in response.
Already, users are earning RetroAchievements left and right, and more games will undoubtedly be added to the list. Because it’s a community-driven platform, things might take time, but the fact that over 180 sets are available, including some of the Wii’s most iconic games, is a testament to that community.
The Wii Is Retro, You Know
If the 20-year anniversary isn’t enough to let you know, then allow the BBC to inform you that the Wii is a retro console, as hard as that is to stomach.
That makes it ripe to be included on a platform like RetroAchievements, though it doesn’t stop the pain of knowing that we’re officially old enough to remember what it was like to get a Wii on Christmas.
If it’s any consolation, then GameStop recently “declared” that the Wii U, PS3 and Xbox 360 are all considered retro consoles for the purposes of its trade-in program. Given that the PlayStation 4 is inching toward its 13th birthday, aka, its teen years, it won’t be long before we start hearing of the nostalgia for Sony’s eighth-generation console.
If you’ll excuse me, I have a cane to go purchase.
