Earlier this month, Google released the quarterly Pixel Drop alongside the March security patch. The update was designed to add new features, resolve prior issues, and boost performance. Instead, it has triggered widespread problems for some, most notably display freezing, particularly when the Always-On Display mode is enabled.
Pixel Devices Becoming Unusable
Reports on Reddit and Google support forums describe the screen freezing or becoming unresponsive on the lock screen with AOD active. One Pixel 10 Pro (review) user reported that the display suddenly froze, ignored all touches, including the power button, and displayed a static gray bar, a symptom many others have also mentioned.
Another Pixel 10 Pro owner wrote that “the bottom of the display becomes fuzzy and freezes the entire phone.” A force reboot temporarily resolves the display issue, but it recurs frequently.
While most users point to the March update, similar complaints about unresponsive displays appeared after the February security patch. The problem seems most common on Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro models, though some Pixel 9 series and Pixel 8 Pro users have reported it as well.
I recently installed the March Pixel Drop on my Pixel 9 Pro XL and have not encountered the bug so far, but I am keeping a close watch for any similar issues.

Potential Fixes for the Pixel Display Bug
Some users suggest rolling back to a previous firmware or security patch level to restore stability or performing a factory reset. Feedback indicates that factory resets rarely fix the freezing.
Google has not yet issued an official statement acknowledging the issue. However, in certain Google Community threads, the official Pixel support has contacted a few of the affected users to request more details, indicating the team is likely investigating and preparing a fix.
With these recurring display problems, some users compare the situation to the early days of Pixel devices, when software bugs were common, and quality assurance drew criticism.
