An extended analysis of Alan Wake 2, one of the original PSSR’s “problem childs”, has once again poured praise on PS5 Pro’s new upscaler.

While the Remedy release was criticised on Sony’s supercharged system for many graphical inconsistencies, including a grainy, pulsing-type image, those problems have been solved with PSSR 2.

Tech experts Digital Foundry point out that lines resolve more clearly, while there’s even an improvement in some texture details when playing in Performance Mode.

The survival horror sequel is a particularly important test for PSSR 2 because it’s a very demanding game. The game renders out way below 1080p, and so that puts more pressure on the upscaler to clean up the image.

The original PSSR exhibited many issues, but in its improved format here, they’re pretty much all erased, resulting in a final output that comes close to native 4K.

There are fewer improvements in Quality Mode, because the overall resolution is higher here, so there’s less pressure on PSSR 2 to perform. But it still returns an improved picture, with potential headroom to push the hardware harder.

All of this echoes a lot of what we’ve been reading and reporting about the PS5 Pro’s new patch – it’s really good, which bodes well for future releases and eventually the PS6.
