Geoff Keighley Calls Out The Oscars And Gets Blocked By The CEO

The 98th Academy Awards ceremony took place yesterday, with the latest round of Oscar winners revealed. As ever, the Academy took a moment to pause and pay tribute to industry figures who passed away in the previous year, whether they be actors, directors, writers, or from any number of the professions that contribute to the films we watch.

However, one key omission was David Keighley, a pioneer behind IMAX technology. Given how much of an impact this has had on the film industry, it would not have been out of place for David Keighley to be included in the In Memoriam segment, as he died last year at the age of 77. But he was not, and his son, Geoff Keighley, has voiced his frustration with this.

Geoff Keighley Calls Out The Oscars For Ignoring His Father, David Keighley, After His Passing Last Year

Geoff Keighley – best known in the gaming industry as the host of The Game Awards – expressed his disappointment with the omission on social media after the show.

“So incredibly disappointed and heartbroken that the Oscars and AMPAS chose not to include my father, David Keighley, and his immeasurable contributions to IMAX and cinema in the In Memoriam segment in the broadcast,” Keighley said on his social media channels. “I will never forget.”

Now, Keighley has commented on the matter again, saying that Oscars CEO Bill Kramer has blocked him on social media over this criticism.

“AMPAS/Oscar CEO Bill Kramer apparently blocked me on Instagram last night after seeing my post expressing disappointment about the broadcast’s In Memoriam omission of my father,” Keighley shared. “You truly can’t make this stuff up.”

It’s unclear if the block was related to Keighley’s comments or if he was blocked prior to this and is only noticing now. It is unclear why Kramer, or whoever runs his Instagram, would block Keighley, however, unless it really was in relation to this callout. Furthermore, when he shared his initial disappointment on Instagram, he tagged the Academy and those behind the ceremony itself, so this might have been how Kramer may have blocked Keighley after noticing this.
