Apple Shocks the Competition: Are Notebook Prices Dropping?

With a smartphone processor in a notebook chassis, Apple is putting pressure on the competition as well as chip and software manufacturers: What is the best strategy to combat Apple’s new MacBook Neo?

Apple always manages to project a special aura for its products compared to its competitors. The brand enjoys a high status among the fashion-conscious and creative circles. However, due to the relatively high price of its smartphones, tablets, notebooks, and watches, the competition has some wiggle room. Even the affordable iPhone 17e is still so expensive with a $599 price tag, making the price gap between its competition with comparable performance rather large.

This market hierarchy has also applied to notebooks — until now. Even the most basic MacBooks cost significantly more than affordable PC notebooks. However, with the launch of the MacBook Neo, Apple is disrupting the market — and raising a ruckus in the industry, as Nick Wu, Asus CFO, revealed at an investor conference.

Will Microsoft Respond With a Slim Surface Laptop?

It seems notebook manufacturers are not the only ones who want to compete better with the cheapest Apple notebook. Even chip manufacturers like AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm are apparently looking for strategies to counter the new low-cost MacBook. After all, the low price could lead to Apple gaining significant market share and thus reducing chip sales for AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm.

Wu is therefore expecting one or two imitators to emerge, and that would not be the first time. Interested parties could look forward to a growing range of well-made notebooks with limited features but comparatively low prices.

One candidate for this modus operandi would be Microsoft, which has already based its Surface notebooks on the MacBook’s design. However, the company (and other manufacturers) is standing in its own way with its current operating system. Windows 11 functions somewhat sluggishly on basic PC systems. However, powerful chips are likely to quickly push the end customer price above critical price points without substantial discounts.

Better Features to Score Points With

Asus’s strategy is to spearhead the attack with better features. It’s not just the eight gigabytes of RAM on the MacBook Neo that is particularly limiting. Considering how AI applications play a major role and work best when operated locally, this is a minor issue. With a 256 GB capacity, data storage is also likely to hit its limits — fast. This becomes even more challenging with soldered-on memory, making space upgrades impossible. In addition, the choice of including just two USB-C ports could cause problems for productive users.

In any case, Apple has achieved one thing: despite RAMageddon with the scarcity of RAM, leading to industry-wide price increases, those interested in a new notebook can hope for better offers in the future, especially within the lower price range.
