If you hate getting lost or the cluttered look of Google Maps you will want to see this latest update. Google has introduced its biggest features in years to the popular navigation app. Learn why these new tools are truly game-changing.
Google continues to provide Maps with new enhancements, but the biggest update in years was just introduced. The world’s largest navigation service is now getting a deeper Gemini integration through the new Ask Maps feature and a new immersive view. Both are starting to roll out today.
Gemini Built-in on Maps
Ask Maps fully integrates Gemini into the app using the most advanced models available. This allows users to perform complex queries using natural language and receive personalized answers. For instance, you can ask a question like “My phone is dying, where can I charge it without having to wait in a long line for coffee?”
The app will then show results in a conversational format or visualize them with a list of cafes that have power outlets. Each suggested place includes review ratings and other vital information, like the estimated ETA from your location and operation hours.
You can also ask specific questions like “Is there a public tennis court with lights that I can play at tonight?” and get recommendations that account for those small nuances. This feature removes the manual labor of filtering out places or searching for reviews across the internet.
Ask Maps is available as a pill-shaped button located below the search bar. Once you tap it, you get an expanded chat window along with presets and sample queries. You can then type or use your voice to input your question.

Maps Will Plan Your Best Trip
In addition, users can use Ask Maps to generate detailed trip itineraries. Google says it will base these recommendations on community suggestions and tips to ensure the most efficient or economical trip. The result will show a daily itinerary along with directions and tips, such as whether a reservation is required or if entrance is free. Overall, it provides the most ideal itineraries and ensures you never get lost.
While Gemini can already do this separately through its own app, having it integrated into Maps is practically useful when planning trips. Users will have everything in one place and will not need to juggle between a chatbot and a map.
Moreover, you will get the most relevant results because the AI uses your search history, saved places, and personal preferences. For example, it will suggest restaurants with vegan menus if you have previously searched for vegan food. You can also command Maps to make reservations.
Ask Maps is heading to iOS and Android, with a first arrival in the US and India. Desktop users will also get the feature soon.

Never Miss Your Exit with the New 3D View
Google also announced a new immersive navigation experience. Those who drive or use Maps for navigation will get a broader 3D view while on the road. This view adapts to the actual terrain, while buildings are shown as transparent, and traffic markings are highlighted for a cleaner experience. This should help drivers avoid missing exits or picking the wrong road to enter.
The company says it has used the spatial awareness of Gemini to create this immersive view. Even better, there is now a preview of your destination using Street View imagery before you even arrive. It will show parking spaces, entrances, and exits so you can plan your arrival ahead of time.
While on the road, Maps will now highlight alternative routes along with trade-offs like paid toll fees. Real-time traffic alerts are finally shipping with this update. Maps Immersive Navigation is heading out to eligible iOS and Android devices in the US beginning today. It will also support Android Auto, CarPlay, and vehicles with Google built in.
