Microsoft is not backing down from its push toward a hybrid gaming platform. Beyond that, the company is now bringing the full Xbox experience to PC users via Windows 11. Will this disrupt Sony and other console makers?
Xbox headlines continue to pour in. Following the restructure of leadership, the new chief shared exciting developments about the next-gen Xbox console dubbed Project Helix. Now, at GDC 2026, we get to hear Microsoft announcing the expansion of the new Xbox experience to PC, which will ship as Xbox mode beginning April 2026.
The company introduced the new Xbox gaming console experience on the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X duo (review), which eventually rolled out to other handheld consoles. As announced by Jason Ronald, Xbox Vice President, the same platform experience is heading to PC users (desktop and laptop) on Windows 11.
Hybrid Gaming Console Experience Arriving on PC
Besides the availability of big screens and more form factors, Microsoft is now calling it Xbox mode. Technically, this offers a full-screen Xbox UI, with support for Xbox elements like buttons and quick access to game libraries and Game Bar. This also offers optimized game controller support for a better experience, while users can use apps and switch quickly between the productivity of Windows and gaming on Xbox.
It’s unknown whether Microsoft is also bringing system optimizations via Xbox mode for smoother, more stable gaming, as it does on the new handheld consoles.

This is one of the company’s impactful initiatives to bring crossover experience to gamers, which has begun with the upcoming hybrid Xbox console.
Xbox Project Helix to Arrive in 2027
In addition to the Xbox mode, Microsoft shared more details about the next-gen Xbox console. Accordingly, the device, which is codenamed Project Helix, will be powered by a custom AMD chip. This will support the “next generation of DirectX and FSR.” It added that “it delivers an order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability.”
And along the line, it hinted at the use of artificial intelligence by integrating “intelligence directly into the graphics and compute pipeline.” Recently, the arrival of new CEO Asha Sharma has many gamers and fans questioning the appointment of the executive, who is known for its AI background and expertise. However, Sharma reassured gamers that it does not want Xbox to be a “soulless AI slop.”
Microsoft will start shipping the early versions of the next Xbox in 2027 to game developers. Per rumor, the console is expected to be released in the same year, which could arrive earlier than Sony’s PlayStation 6.
