Starfield has, in some ways, came and went. That’s not quite fair; Bethesda Game Studios’ massive 2023 RPG has been played by millions, and for all the doomscrolling, there are certainly longtime fans who are excited for the second expansion. But it’s a “victim of your own success” deal—the studio behind The Elder Scrolls and Fallout didn’t deliver a newcomer with as much mental staying power, and it kind of shows.
Myriad are the causes, but one well-established video game composer thinks it’s all a bit null and void. Inon Zur, who has graced us with terrific scores in games from Dragon Age: Origins to every Fallout game from the third forward, has keen things to say about visionary developer Todd Howard… and they include a rather optimistic view of Starfield. Which, yes, he also composed for.
A New Age Dawns
Starfield will reportedly launch on PlayStation 5 on April 7. If that leak holds true, a far wider audience will finally have their chance to judge the game on their own merits, rather than via all the gloom (punctuated by periodic glee) that they’ll have encountered online from Xbox and PC players worldwide.
Could this be the start of something big? That’s not quite what Zur’s saying, but it’s not too far off the mark. In a key conversation with RPG Site, the musician regards Todd Howard as someone who “sees things that people will start to find out years later.” And that’s where things took a spacetrotting turn:
“He believes in his way, and it just has proven time and time again that eventually people will understand his vision. It just takes time and this is a common thing for all the big visionaries. Sometimes people really don’t understand them correctly, but they were strong enough to stay on course, and Todd will stay on course on Starfield. Starfield will eventually become something that will be legendary. I have no doubt. It’s just a matter of time.”
It’s an interesting perspective, if, doubtless, one in which many will take umbrage. It’s also something which might arguably fly somewhat afoul of Howard’s own most recent statements regarding the future of Starfield. Namely, that the next expansion and ongoing overhaul won’t fundamentally change the game, at its core; he’s outright said that folks who are down on it might not find anything that’ll change their POV in a major way.
Time will tell.
