Trails developer Falcom has plans to wrap the long-running RPG series up within the next six years or so, and it’s now settled on how it all ends.
Yep, company president Toshihiro Kondo is at it again, dropping interview bombs like no one’s business. This time, in a huge four-page talk with Famitsu (as translated by Gematsu), the ever-talkative boss provides some eye-opening insight.
To be fair, Falcom is celebrating its 45th anniversary right now, so we suppose Kondo’s allowed to go nuts.
So, the headline here is that the studio’s decided on how Trails actually ends. Remember, this series currently spans 13 games — that’s over two decades of interconnected storytelling — so finally settling on a definitive finale is a huge deal.
However, said finale is still years away, if everything goes to plan. Kondo basically confirms that there’ll be one more saga — the “final” protagonist’s “profession” is in the process of being decided, apparently — and Falcom’s got a development timeline in mind.
Indeed, the current plan is to announce the final Trails title on the company’s 50th anniversary — which is in 2031 — before wrapping up development in 2032.
So assuming this all sticks, we’re looking at what? Maybe three, four, five more Trails games? It’s honestly a bit mad to think about.
As for the next Trails game — the sequel to the recently released Trails beyond the Horizon — Kondo says the story’s ready to go.
It’s assumed that Horizon 2 — or whatever it ends up being called — will launch in 2027. Meanwhile, a remake of the second Trails game, Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter, is set to release this autumn / fall.
