Fortnite might be an absolute juggernaut of an IP these days, but it’s worth remembering that this wasn’t always the case. Throw yourself back to 2017, and Fortnite started out as a lucky little PvE game called Save the World, which had you fighting off zombies in a bid for survival. It wasn’t particularly massive, and Fortnite only really exploded after it pinched the battle royale formula from PUBG.
Nine years on, Save the World is still kicking around as a tribute to Fortnite’s origins, but it was always a paid mode that you needed to lump up the cash for if you wanted to try it out, which is a little strange since everything else Fortnite offers is free to play.
Well, it now seems like Epic Games has also realized that having a paid mode in a free to play game isn’t great, as it’s finally making Save the World free to play as well. Starting on April 16 next month, Save the World will be completely free to access, with existing owners set to receive Superchargers, Vouchers, and Gold as thanks for the past nine years of support.
Don’t Worry, Founders Will Still Earn V-Bucks
One of the biggest questions that we had about this change is whether Save the World going free to play would mean that the mode would stop becoming the V-Bucks generator that it was previously. It would be very easy for Epic to scrap the free V-Bucks you can get by playing Save the World as a Founder, especially since it needs to “pay the bills”, but thankfully, it doesn’t seem as though that’s the case.
Once Save the World goes free to play, Founders will still be able to earn V-Bucks through Daily Quests, Mission Alerts, Storm Shield Defense Missions, and existing Challenges, so no worries about the V-Bucks farm going away for now. It’s possible that Epic could reduce the amount of V-Bucks that the mode gives now it’s free, but that’s probably something we’ll have to wait to find out.
