How Multiplayer Works In Slay The Spire 2

How Multiplayer Works In Slay The Spire 2

If you have been playing Slay the Spire 2 alone, you might notice that this isn’t a radical sequel: it plays pretty much the same as the original game, with better art, new cards and enemies, and many other changes and details. However, you have slept on what makes Slay the Spire 2 a new experience: playing with friends.

Yes, this roguelike deckbuilder features a cooperative mode, in which you can play your runs, make progress, and build your decks with friends. Let’s learn how Multiplayer works in Slay the Spire 2 and how you can play with friends.

Slay the Spire 2 is currently on Early Access, and the content of this guide is subject to change.

How To Play With Friends

You can start playing coop with up to three friends as soon as you boot the game up. You’ll see a window suggesting that you play a run alone first, but you can ignore it.

To start playing with friends, go to Multiplayer and select whether you want to host or join (it doesn’t affect anyone’s progress). The former will lead you to the character select screen, where you’ll be able to invite your friends by pressing the button on the top left side of the screen. The latter will make you first join a game before selecting this.

Then you select the Standard mode (the only one available at the moment), and your coop run will start.

Progression in coop works the same way, too. You’ll make progress in your Compendium and unlock Epochs and other things as if you were playing alone.

How Multiplayer Works

In essence, Multiplayer works the same way as playing Slay the Spire 2 alone: the core mechanics of the game and how you make progress are the same. However, there are a few interesting details and added mechanics when you play coop.

  • Map Drawing. You can make drawings while selecting the next route on the map. Excellent for suggesting routes.
  • Enemies are enhanced. They won’t do new things, but their health and damage will scale depending on how many players are in the group. Also, keep in mind that they focus on all players at all times.
  • Multiplayer exclusive cards. There are special cards that affect multiple players or only your allies. Plus, you can use your Potions on allies.
  • Each one has their loot. When you interact with NPCs or participate in events, each player will receive their loot. When opening a chest, though, you will have to decide who keeps each Relic.
  • Sacrifice your healing. When in a campfire, instead of making your character rest, you can give the healing to your ally.

As a final note, each character will have their own health bar, and you can keep going if anyone falls — it will be game over when all the players die.
