Atlus could be gearing up towards a Digital Devil Saga revival, if we’re to put an awful lot of faith into a newly announced port.
Here’s the gist: an old Digital Devil Saga spin-off game, titled Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner: A’s Test Server (jeez!) is being re-released on PC and Nintendo Switch in Japan.
This was originally a mobile title that launched all the way back in 2006, and it actually incorporated a monthly subscription model. It features a separate story in which main characters from the base games dungeon-crawl through a gigantic tower.
A standalone complete edition was released a year later, in 2007 — and that’s the version that this surprise port is based on.
Again, it’s a leap of faith to suggest that this has anything to do with Digital Devil Saga remasters — but we can see the logic.
After all, Atlus has shown that it’s keen to bring back its older titles — especially those from the PS2 era. Just last year, we got Raido Remastered, and fans fully expect its sequel to get the same treatment in the near future.
The two Digital Devil Saga games certainly fit the bill; they’re beloved by hardcore Shin Megami Tensei enthusiasts, and we dare say that they’d be well received amongst more recent Persona fans, thanks to their character-based storytelling.
It’s worth pointing out that Atlus itself isn’t bringing A’s Test Server back. It’s being ported by a different Japanese publisher called G-Mode.
Still, the timing is bound to raise an eyebrow, and ultimately, for the reasons we’ve already outlined, we wouldn’t be at all surprised to learn that Atlus is cooking something up behind the scenes.
