A week ago, we all stood in amazement as Resident Evil Requiem marched to an astounding 344,214 concurrent players on Steam, becoming the highest-played Resident Evil title on Steam and among the 10 highest-played primarily single-player titles ever on the platform.
A week later, Slay the Spire 2, the sequel to the extremely popular rougelike title, has said hold my beer. That’s because, after only having released on March 5, the same date as Marathon, the indie title has become the 20th most-played title by peak concurrent players on Steam … ever.
Yes, you read that right.
With an enormous 526,793 concurrent players, all of which came a little over 10 hours ago from the time of writing, Slay the Spire 2 is the 20th most-played title on the platform. Its peak has out-beaten several other record-breaking titles, including Arc Raiders, as well as the aforementioned Resident Evil Requiem.
Steam Deck Is The First Of Many RAM Shortage Tragedies In Video Games
Valve’s handheld is out of stock right now thanks to RAM and memory shortages.
It’s extremely important to note that this is a title in Early Access, meaning the final product has not been delivered. Yet, that hasn’t stopped players from appearing in droves to play the game.
At $24.99 USD for the title, assuming all prices stay relatively equal across regions, that’s over $12 million for developer Mega Crit. Again — and we can’t stress this enough — the game is just 48 hours old.
Marathon, Meanwhile, Has Yet To Meet Its Original Peak
That Slay the Spire 2 was able to double the number of concurrent players it had well after its release is pretty astounding. Because, on the other side of the coin, Marathon has yet to even match the 88,387 that it peaked with on PC.
Right now, Marathon has 73,045 players, no small count by any means. Its 24-hour peak is 78,498. However, both those figures are just under 10,000 players down from its 88,337 peak, at least on Steam.
Originally, Mega Crit had some funny words for Bungie on social media after it became increasingly apparent that Slay the Spire 2 was more popular than Marathon. However, those barbs happened at 177,181 players were engaging with Slay the Spire 2 against the aforementioned 88,337 for Marathon.
It’s unlikely that anyone could have predicted that Slay the Spire 2 would continue to add to that amount by the hundred thousands to march to a half million peak and enter some rarefied Steam territory. But that’s exactly what happened. Momentum is a serious thing and Slay the Spire 2 has it in spades.
