Microsoft Bans “Microslop” And Similar Words From Copilot’s Discord

Let’s play a game. Imagine that you’re Microsoft. I know, I know—you’re probably already thinking about AI, and not just because you read this article’s headline. Copilot is their end-all, be-all, their alleged magnum opus, their ticket forward to an all-AI, all-the-time, future. Whether we like it or not.

Lots of people do not care for it. People who have used the term “Microslop” on many occasions, including, most recently, in Copilot’s dedicated server on messaging platform Discord. Microsoft, predictably, is not fond of this. In fact, the “Magnificent Seven” tech company’s CEO expressed high hopes at the start of the new year that people would stop saying “slop” in 2026. So, uh, we see how that’s going.

As PC Gamer reports, Microsoft has been swift to ban the word “Microslop” from usage in Copilot’s Discord server under grounds that it’s “inappropriate.” So is Big Tech’s desire to turn every single thing that I do on a daily basis into a teaching lesson for their cutesy-wootsy widdle “assistants,” but I digress. Windows Latest verified that the derogatory term was blocked, but users were quick to find workarounds.

“Microsl0p” did the trick for a bit until the server’s moderators snagged fun from folks’ fingertips. “Sloppysoft” has been another big push. Per Microsoft’s recent statement regarding the situation, however, this is partly about safety. I guess? There was a temporary complete lockdown, you see, although it appears to have been lifted.

“The Copilot Discord channel has recently been targeted by spammers attempting to disrupt and overwhelm the space with harmful content not related to Copilot. Initially, this spam consisted of walls of text, so we added temporary filters for select terms to slow this activity. We have since made the decision to temporarily lock down the server while we work to implement stronger safeguards to protect users from this harmful spam and help ensure the server remains a safe, usable space for the community.” -Microsoft’s official response

Protecting users from harmful spam. A safe, usable space. Listen, please, focus on maintaining the stability of the OS you’re famous for. Prio that over weeding Copilot back into everything we touch, often at the expense of PC performance, needling it back in with every update, no matter how many times I disable it as much as possible. Protect me from that, Microsoft, and I’ll stop the slop.
