Is Gemini Finally Useful? Your Phone Can Now Automatically Order Dinner

We’ve all been there: you’re hungry and want to order food, but you’re discouraged by the tedious task of clicking through endless menus. With its latest Pixel update, Google wants your Android phone to handle those chores for you through a quick prompt.

While Google has invested heavily in AI for years, many of the most practical, game-changing features have yet to reach consumers. Google aims to make Gemini more functional through agentic or autonomous capabilities, and these are finally arriving, starting with the ability to order food and book rides.

Gemini Will Order Your Groceries or Book a Ride

Google has officially announced the March Pixel Drop update, headlined by a feature called Order with Gemini. As the name suggests, this is a task-automation tool powered by the chatbot. It enables Gemini to handle repetitive, everyday tasks such as ordering groceries or hailing a cab through simple voice or text prompts.

For example, you can ask Gemini to “order a large pepperoni pizza” from a specific restaurant. While the assistant works in the background, it takes over the entire process, including navigating the app, selecting your preferences, confirming the delivery address, and finishing up with payment. Similarly, Gemini can arrange a rideshare. You simply provide the destination, and the AI handles the rest within the app.

Essentially, it functions as a true digital assistant that launches apps and completes transactions on your behalf, requiring only a single instruction to get started. This is a capability many users have been longing for for years.

You’re Still In Control

To address concerns about the AI potentially messing up an order, Google has implemented safeguards to prevent accidental bulk orders or incorrect addresses. Users can monitor the process in real time or interrupt the AI at any point from the app. It ensures that full human control remains over the final transaction. This way, you don’t end up getting burritos for your pizza order.

The Order with Gemini feature is launching in beta and will initially work with a select group of apps, such as DoorDash and Uber, though a comprehensive list has not yet been released. At launch, the beta will be available to users in the U.S. and South Korea.

Due to hardware constraints, the feature is currently exclusive to the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro (review), and Pixel 10 Pro XL. However, Google has confirmed that the feature will eventually expand to non-Pixel devices, including the Samsung Galaxy S26 series (review).

For those who prefer dining out, Google also introduced Restaurant Recommendations with Magic Cue. This feature allows Gemini to suggest relevant dining options while you are chatting with friends or family. By analyzing the context and nuances of your conversation, it provides tailored suggestions directly in the chat. This is currently available for the Pixel 10 series, including the Pixel 10 Pro Fold

Google is rolling out the update starting today, though it will arrive in a staggered release for users over the coming weeks.
