Resident Evil Requiem has a mysterious challenge called ‘The Final Puzzle’ that’s worth 20,000 completion points, but nobody has been able to solve it yet, and it’s not for a lack of trying. In fact, the community has pooled together its knowledge into a dedicated subreddit that has one goal: getting to the bottom of this bizarre rabbit hole.
Spoilers for Resident Evil Requiem.
The first step becomes clear when you escape the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center’s basement. Grace narrowly escapes the clutches of the Girl as the elevator crashes down and severs its hand, which you can pick up after the cutscene ends. It’s not immediately clear what the hand is used for, but when you leave the clinic for water treatment, you’ll notice that it can be discarded, so it must be used in the first half of the game.
As broken down in an extensive thread by u/Naeloah on r/TheFinalPuzzle, it was found that the hand can be analyzed with a laser microscope to uncover a hidden message: “Let’s play,” followed by the sequence ‘GGC AAG AUA ACG UGU CAU.’ It was then theorized that each letter might correspond to the Sun, Moon, and Star symbols used to open the various contraptions around the clinic for the quartz blocks.
Synth Potato, who daylights as an aerospace engineer, noticed that the hourglass in Victor’s office had another hidden message, “U = 380,000,” and that “G = 150,000,000” was written on the side of the blood analyzer. The final clue was uncovered in a file on Grace’s blood analysis, “C = 4.2 ly.”
As it turns out, “ly” stands for light years. 4.2 light years away from Earth is a star, 380,000km away is the Moon, and 150,000,000km away is the sun. That means:
- C = Star.
- G = Sun.
- U = Moon.
That leaves ‘A’, which was actually solved much later in the game during Leon Kennedy’s return to Raccoon City. After defeating Mr X on the path to the Orphanage, fans found the head of a Toy Uncle bobblehead in the middle of the basketball court, matching the body in Kendo’s Shop. Interestingly, if you kick the basketball into the fallen hoop, you can interact with the body to receive another clue: “Just ignore A.”
So, the sequence is now ‘GGC GUC GUG UCU,’ which, when inputted into the lead researcher’s office safe, plays the sound of a child laughing. The only clue that The Final Puzzle gives you in the challenges menu is that you must “Let the sweet pair hear the voice,” so the working theory right now is that you must bring two characters (or enemies) to this room and make them listen to the child’s laughter.
Other translations may offer insight into whom this pair is; as noted by u/Map_Goblin, it varies from “adorable duo” to “little friends”, “delightful couple,” “loving couple,” “pair of angels,” “two of us” (both women), “sweet couple,” and “lovely two people”. This seems to rule out the idea that Leon and Grace must complete the puzzle (in fact, Leon doesn’t seem able to interact with it at all), but who exactly the “sweet pair” are is unclear.
Some have tried bringing Emily along with Grace to trigger the laugh, but that didn’t work, and it appears impossible to bring both singing zombies into the room. Another idea put forward was to view “the children” in the model viewer after hearing the laugh, but that also did not work. However, the laugh may only be one part of the code, as the puzzle box can still be interacted with after hearing it. You can read a full list of everything the community has tried here.
A prevailing theory right now is that the laughter is linked to the orphanage later in the game, and that it may play a key role in solving The Final Puzzle; one idea is that, when the children bang on the beds while looking for the little girl, they’re doing so in a pattern. Some believe this could be morse code, tying into the ‘Let’s play’ clue, but it’s unclear what significance it might have right now, if any. Then there’s the rug, which features star, sun, and moon symbols surrounded by letters.
Interestingly, when Leon drops into the sewers from the destroyed orphanage, there’s an empty room with panels colored red, green, and blue for “no apparent reason”, which has sparked all sorts of ideas that it might be another step in completing the challenge. Though again, nobody is sure how it connects, if it even does.
If nothing else, Capcom is really making us work for these 20,000 completion points. But what’s on the other side of all these cryptic puzzles, nobody knows — let’s just hope it’s worth all the trouble.
