Assassin’s Creed 3 Devs Weren’t Sure Ships Would Work, Director Reveals

Assassin’s Creed 3 Devs Weren’t Sure Ships Would Work, Director Reveals

Very rarely are there things that gamers can universally agree on. After all, the fandom is squarely built on allegiances to specific consoles, exclusive games and even companies. That said, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone that didn’t love Assassin’s Creed IV: Blag Flag’s naval combat elements.

So much so, that for years, fans begged Ubisoft to make an entire game centered around ship combat. Unfortunately, that title ended up being Skull & Bones, but the point still stands.

As it turns out, the ship aspect, which was originally featured in Assassin’s Creed 3, was originally intended to play a larger role in its predecessor. However, a fear of everything not working out pushed things off.

In an interview with PC Gamer, ex-director Alex Hutchinson shared some of the background that led to the feature taking more of a backseat role in AC3.

“There was a whole fear that the tech [for the ships] wouldn’t work,” Hutchinson said.

If Ubisoft Can’t Remake A PS2 Game, How Can We Trust It To Do Anything?

The Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake has officially been cancelled.

The team couldn’t put all their eggs in one basket, so decisions were made.

“So it couldn’t be a huge part of the main story, because we weren’t certain it was going to work,” Hutchinson said. “And then when it was cool, then you’re like, ‘This is great.'”

Its lack of focus owes to an old development model where a title’s Alpha, Beta and Final builds would come in one after the other, leaving very little room to decide one way or the other.

In the end, Ubisoft did make those ship navigating dreams come true, but it is interesting to think how much different Assassin’s Creed 3 would’ve been had it played a bigger role.

We Might Get The Chance To Relive Those Battles Soon Enough

In one of the worst-kept secrets of all-time, Black Flag is getting a remake. It’s been hinted at, confirmed and unconfirmed ad nauseam, but it’s starting to look like we’re in the clear.

Whenever it does release, which should be sometime between April onward, it’ll give fans a chance to relive all that glorious naval combat and the sea shanties that accompanied the world of Black Flag.

Given its remake nature, there’s a good chance we’ll be able to experience Ubisoft’s vision to the fullest, which, on its own, is a rather exciting prospect, even if the constant will they, won’t they of it all has been annoying.
