Beast Of Reincarnation Director Only Had Smaller Roles Before Directing New Game

Beast of Reincarnation could be Game Freak’s most ambitious title ever. As the Pokemon games (rightly) begin to draw flak for their failure to innovate, Beast of Reincarnation looks set to show just what the studio is truly capable of.

The idea for the game came from Kota Furushima, who pitched it during Game Freak’s Gear Project, an initiative that incentivizes developers to foster creativity and pitch their game ideas to Game Freak’s higher-ups.

After his game, codenamed Project Bloom, was approved in 2021, Furushima began to work on the project alone, and it must have been a pretty scary time for the developer, as not only is this the first time he stepped into the director role, but his previous roles on the Pokemon games have been far smaller than his one on Beast of Reincarnation.

Beast Of Reincarnation Is Kota Furushima’s First Game As A Director

Furushima told 4Gamer in Japan (and translated by TheGamer) that he simply wanted to tell the story of a woman and her pet in Beast of Reincarnation. During the game’s early stages, he didn’t even know what genre the game would be, simply wanting to make “something that could express” the “emotional feeling I get when I come into contact with creative works like watching a movie or reading a novel.”

With such creative ideas and the gall to step into the director’s chair, you’d imagine that Furushima had high-level roles in the games industry, but that wasn’t the case. While he certainly gained a lot of experience working for Game Freak, and on Pokemon titles, his most recent roles were as the sound manager for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet and Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

Beast Of Reincarnation Looks Better Than Pokemon Because Some Of Its Art May Be Outsourced

Game Freak’s small team isn’t working alone.

Prior to his roles on Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Arceus, Furushima was on the battle planning team for Sword and Shield, and did battle planning, UI, and communication features planning on Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

It’s a relatively light CV for somebody taking on such a big role developing a game that looks set to be one of the year’s biggest. But given that it’s his brainchild and how good it looks, Furushima may be onto a winner. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait too long to find out, either, with the game’s release date revealed at last week’s PlayStation State of Play event.
