RPCS3 Emulator Provides Update On Library Status

RPCS3 Emulator Provides Update On Library Status

In a major breakthrough for emulation and overall game preservation, the entire library of the PlayStation 3 is nearly playable via the RPCS3 emulator. Specifically, 62 games are stuck in the “Intro” stage, down from 101, according to a new update from the project’s developers.

Of the 62 games, 46 are PlayStation Move titles, and once those are figured out, the viral PS3 emulation tool will be ever close to

“Project Complete” status.

As it stands, 73.06 percent of the PS3’s library is classified as “Playable,” meaning the games can be completed without any serious glitches, hiccups or bugs impeding progress. An additional 25.12 percent are “In-Game,” and can be played, but not completed.

Nobody Knows The PlayStation Touchpad Better Than Sucker Punch

Not since Infamous Second Son has a PlayStation controller felt this fun to use.

The project, which started in 2011, is described as such:

RPCS3 is a multi-platform open-source Sony PlayStation 3 emulator and debugger written in C++ for Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD. The purpose of the project is to completely and accurately emulate the Sony PlayStation 3 Computer Entertainment System in its entirety with the power of open-source community and reverse engineering.

Our goal is to preserve the legacy of the PlayStation 3 hardware and its vast library by bringing it and its exclusives to the PC platform. We want to achieve this by targeting and supporting multiple operating systems as well as being compatible with a wide range of computer hardware with realistic requirements.

It’s a massive undertaking, and one of some serious importance as most PlayStation 3 games have been stuck on the system. The success has also given way to a similar emulator for the purposes of preserving the entirety of the PlayStation 4 library.

So Much Of The PS3 Library Is Stranded

While several strides have been made in bringing forward some of the PlayStation 3’s best titles, there is still so much that is not available easily. Titles like the Killzone and Resistance trilogies, inFamous duology and Ratchet and Clank are all still only available on the console and now via emulation.

For what it’s worth, a major locked title, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, was revealed to be part of the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2, meaning one less game to worry about. Additionally, the first three God of War titles are being remade.

Still, fans have long dreamed about having native emulation on Sony’s current hardware offerings, much like what Xbox offers. Until then, it’s all “streaming,” which isn’t nearly as foolproof as it sounds.
