Killer Inn’s Early Access Met With Mixed Reviews And Less Than 1,000 CCU

Killer Inn’s Early Access Met With Mixed Reviews And Less Than 1,000 CCU

Killer Inn‘s early access period started earlier this week, but it looks like it’s not going very well since it’s been met with mixed reviews and not even reached 1,000 concurrent players on Steam.

As anyone waiting for news on Kingdom Hearts 4 knows, Square Enix is in a bit of a weird place right now. Last year it announced that it was changing tactics to focus more on its big triple-A franchises, which has basically left the company in a bit of a reset state while it figures things out.

That made the announcement of a brand-new IP, Killer Inn, at last year’s Summer Game Fest quite a surprise. The social deduction genre is pretty crowded nowadays and hard to break into, so it seemed like a pretty big risk on Square Enix’s part and something that left a lot of fans annoyed after waiting to see updates on its other series. That risk doesn’t seem to have paid off just yet.

Killer Inn Launches In Early Access To Mixed Reviews And A Low CCU

“A Mess”

Killer Inn’s early access period started a few days ago on February 12, but it doesn’t appear to have made much impact at all in the days since it released. According to SteamDB, the game had a peak concurrent player count of just 813 players, which dropped to as low as 237 earlier in the day.

Killer Inn is also currently only available on Steam, so that player count is for once completely accurate to the game’s whole playerbase.

Killer Inn Preview: An Asymmetrical Murder Mystery That’s Sharp And Stylish

Killer Inn is a fresh take on asymmetrical murder mysteries. Here’s everything we learned in this hands-on preview.

Considering Killer Inn is solely a multiplayer game, those early player numbers are really not a good sign for the game, especially in early access, when the game is even cheaper to get into and give a try. Killer Inn’s closed beta previously had more than 1,000 concurrent players, so it’s strange to see it drop off when the doors are open for everyone.

It’d be a little less worrying if players were at least really digging Killer Inn and spreading some good word of mouth, but that isn’t the case either. As of the time of writing, Killer Inn’s Steam page sits with a “Mixed” review score after 206 reviews, more than half of which are negative.

Based on these reviews, it seems that the main issue that a lot of players have is that there’s just not much social deduction being done in matches, and very little communication, with some suggesting that a region lock might help things. Combine that with connections issues, “boring” quests, and an unfair balance between Wolves and Lambs, and things aren’t going so well for Killer Inn.
