Metal Gear Solid 4’s New Release Won’t Include MGO

We all knew it was unlikely. There really just has not been precedent for it. But today, it’s official. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots’ upcoming port will not include Metal Gear Online.

It’s not all doom and gloom. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker will, for a blessing, keep its co-op and versus modes intact for the leap to modern hardware. Besides, isn’t it still quite nice that MGS4 is finally escaping PlayStation 3 prison after 18 years? I thought so, too. Why am I still crying…?

No Place For MGO?

IGN spotted the bummer-with-a-silver-lining via Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2’s official website. A disclaimer for MGS4 notes that Metal Gear Online won’t be back. On the other hand, Peace Walker is prepped and ready to deploy its online suite of missions. I’m happy for that, but man. Let me tell you. I have such amazing memories of MGS4’s iteration of MGO. I do not play multiplayer games much. I can count on literally one hand the number of shooters I’ve sampled in this fashion (and, like, four hands max for how many of them I’ve even tried the campaigns on).

MGO just hit different. Strategy was key, even if, yeah, cheaters could run rampant at times. Tactical elements were everywhere. You didn’t even necessarily have to be a great shot in order to help your team out, as many modes thrived on stealth stuff, which is my jam. I’m not saying there aren’t any shooters on the market that require strategy; of course there are. But the goofy-meets-hardcore Metal Gear Online, in both its MGS4 iteration and its MGS3: Subsistence beginning, were simply sublime. (Not so much MGSV’s. Eh.)

We Now Know The Names Of Five More Games That Ubisoft Just Canceled

Albeit, a couple are codenames.

If you snag Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 for Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, you’ll even get wireless multiplayer. I wouldn’t really recommend the former, but the latter console will likely run it quite nicely. You can play Peace Walker portably, as was originally envisioned. But on a far larger screen, and far prettier, to boot.

Do you, too, miss MGO? Maybe we crossed paths on there once or twice before the servers shut down nearly 14 years ago. Perhaps we were comrades. The thing about MGS4, is that people critique how little time we really spend in its bigger battlefields… and they’re right. But MGO brought the Middle East and South America to life in such lush ways. It gave me hundreds of hours in places that took about 90 minutes’ worth of gameplay to get through. I’ll miss it.
