In 2024, PlayStation made a surprise move and launched Lego Horizon Adventures on the Nintendo Switch 2, and just last year, it brought Helldivers 2 to Xbox, showing a markedly different approach to exclusivity than we’ve traditionally seen from the console giant. But there might be more to come.
Reports have been spreading on X that the rumoured God of War metroidvania spin-off will also launch on Nintendo Switch 2, to which reputable leaker NateTheHate responded, “Last year […] I heard whispers that it was being considered for a multiplatform release. Whether that consideration evolved into an active plan… I don’t know.”
The Future Of Exclusivity
So, at the very least, Sony reportedly had discussions about bringing a God of War title to other platforms. Of course, we’ve seen the Norse games make the leap to PC, something of a Switzerland when it comes to exclusives, but launching a new game on a rival console would be uncharted territory (though there’s no sign of a new Uncharted game coming to Switch or Xbox, hardy har).
Exclusives may be going out of vogue entirely with the next generation, however, as several journalists have now claimed the new Xbox will be a Windows 11-based gaming PC with a console-style overlay, similar to the Ally handheld. If true, this would allow for Xbox to tap into Steam (as Microsoft has all but confirmed is the plan), and thus the PlayStation games already available on Valve’s platform — that means Spider-Man, God of War, Uncharted, Sackboy, and much more.
Some have argued that PlayStation may block their games from running on Xbox, but if the next-gen console is a Windows 11 gaming PC first and foremost, it’s hard to imagine how Sony would achieve that. However, with RAM prices increasing exponentially, and shortages getting worse, next-gen may have been delayed, so it could be a while before we see that vision come to life.
