Sony has turned what was starting to feel like a relatively quiet week in the world of gaming into an absolute barnburner by announcing its biggest State of Play in history. PlayStation is set to showcase a number of first and third-party titles later this week as part of a showcase that promises to deliver some huge reveals and updates across its 60-minute runtime.
This presentation has been rumoured for a long time now, especially with the console giant having next to nothing on its release slate right at the moment. So, here’s hoping it brings plenty of big news alongside some welcome surprises. Here is when it takes place, where you can watch it unfold, alongside all the things we’d love to see make an appearance during the show.
When Is The February State Of Play, And How Can I Watch It?
The upcoming State of Play will take place on Thursday, February 12 at 2pm PT/5pm ET/ 11pm CEST/10pm GMT and can be seen across PlayStation’s official YouTube and Twitch channels.
If you’d rather not tune into the action live, the majority of trailers will be available online in due time, and we’ll be covering all the major news here at TheGamer.
What To Expect At The February State Of Play
Considering the upcoming State of Play is promising over an hour of news, we can expect a lot of variety from the announcements it has in store. First and foremost, I imagine Sony will want to provide some updates on its first-party line-up for the next several months.
Chief among those is Marvel’s Wolverine by Insomniac Games, which was initially revealed several years ago and has been in development for even longer. I’m at a point where I’d love for the game to be put in my lap so I can judge it for myself instead of watching more trailers.
Fortunately, I wouldn’t be surprised if this week’s State of Play finally provides players with a concrete release date alongside additional gameplay footage and details. Previously penned for a Fall 2026 release, I would love to finally have a date to pop into my calendar. Perhaps it will be a good time to show us what else the studio has been working on besides its range of Marvel projects as well? I’d kill for a first look at the next Ratchet & Clank.
While I don’t expect it to launch this year, it’s been a while since we’ve received an update on Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. First revealed at The Game Awards in 2024, it’s about time we received our first comprehensive glimpse at its gameplay. In fact, I wouldn’t be hugely shocked if this ends up being one of the show’s big players with several minutes dedicated to Neil Druckmann showing off gameplay for the first time. I want to learn about the story, characters, and what exactly we will be doing in the game itself.
Dear Naughty Dog, pretty please don’t announce a remake of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. It would really bring down the mood.
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls has already received a comprehensive update on its Steam page ahead of this week’s show, and given how hard PlayStation has been pushing this in the past, expect it to make an appearance. My money is on a confirmed release date and loads of high-profile character and stage reveals. Maybe we’ll even get an open beta or a more comprehensive playable demo that hardcore fans can datamine to high heaven.
Bungie and Sony are probably sweating bullets about the upcoming release of Marathon, but it would be poor form not to at least mention this high-profile title at the show, given the minds behind both Destiny and Halo helped bring it to life. After the success of Arc Raiders, part of me hopes that this stylish take on the extraction shooter has a real chance of success, but so much of the well is poisoned already that it’s hard to predict how things will unfold when the game launches next month. Expect it to show up in some form.
Speaking of games nobody is going to play, it feels like a great time to reveal Starfield’s long-rumoured arrival on PS5. Xbox has been porting its back catalogue thick and fast to the Sony platform in recent years, with some major releases like Fable even set to arrive on day one. Though Starfield wasn’t exactly a critical darling when it first arrived on Xbox and PC back in 2023, I bet there are still plenty of PlayStation gamers who would pay full price for a new Bethesda RPG.
Putting aside all the predictions mentioned above, I’ve assembled a lighting round of sorts below, including a number of things I expect to see make an appearance the show before we get into some more exciting pipedream announcements:
- Onimusha: Way of the Sword finally gets a release date
- Capcom offers us one last look at Resident Evil Requiem before launch
- Saros receives even more gameplay and a playable demo
- PlayStation VR 2 isn’t mentioned a single time as a final nail in its coffin
- Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis receives a deeper look at gameplay
- PlayStation Plus games for March are revealed and showcased
- Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is finally confirmed for PC
- Ghost of Yotei receives either multiplayer or expansion news
What We’d Love To See At The February State Of Play
Now I’ve been all professional and reasonable with my expectations, please indulge me as I fall into a fangirl-addled stupor for several paragraphs. It’s been almost two years now since the release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, with a launch date for the Switch 2 and Xbox versions recently being announced to boot. So, with the reboot trilogy reaching more people now than it ever has, isn’t it about time to reveal the third entry?
State of Play has become a regular home for such announcements in the past, and I bet my bottom dollar that Final Fantasy 7 Reunion, Revenge, Reclaim, Resolve, Ratatouille, or whatever the hell it ends up being called would be one heck of a mic drop for the final reveal. The team behind it have already teased that this is going to be a big year for the Remake project, and if it intends to release the final chapter to celebrate the original game’s 30th anniversary next year, why not provide us with our first sneak peek this week?
Adding to the pile of JRPG revelations, it would also be nice to see Kingdom Hearts 4 offer up some proof of life after several years without any major news. It’s been revealed, so we know it’s in development, but literally any indication regarding how far along it is and if folks can expect to play it before the end of the decade would be wonderful. Speaking of, what of the next mainline Final Fantasy? It’s possible Square Enix wants to get these other projects out of the way first before it figures out what is next for the marque franchise.
A few more far-fetched announcement predictions for funsies — Devil May Cry 6, Fallout 3 Remastered, Astro Bot expansion or sequel, Gang of Dragon, and Halo: Campaign Evolved.
Sony Santa Monica is another first-party studio who must be hard at work on new projects right now, although we know nothing about them. With the Norse sega now behind us, God of War fans are hopeful that the series will embrace Egyptian or Japanese mythology. Time will tell, but part of me also wouldn’t object to the studio tackling a new property considering all the creative talent that calls it home. There is also the long rumoured spin-off that will apparently be a metroidvania that returns to Greek mythology for the first time in decades. I would love to see that finally emerge, and potentially even with a 2026 release date.
My heart is also holding out for news on a potential Bloodborne remaster, or at the very least an idea on what Bluepoint has been up to for the entire PS5 generation. It wowed us with the excellent Demon’s Souls remake back at launch, but has been silent ever since. While this is a real stretch, if PS5 is planned as the primary platform for GTA 6, maybe this showcase is a perfect means to announce that partnership to the world?
With 60 minutes to cover, I have no doubt that this week’s State of Play is going to be packed to the rafters with announcements both predictable and unexpected, and if we’re lucky, a few of the things speculated upon above will show up and make our day.
