George R.R. Martin Reveals The Inspiration Behind A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms—an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s book The Hedge Knight—has proven extremely popular with viewers following the release of its fourth episode. The first season will have six episodes in total, with HBO then moving to adapt Martin’s The Sworn Sword for the second season.

At this stage, Martin is no stranger to having his work adapted for television. A Game of Thrones adapted Martin’s unfinished A Song of Ice and Fire series, while House of the Dragon is currently adapting Martin’s novel Fire & Blood. Martin plans to make the series a duology with an upcoming novel called Blood & Fire.

The Tales of Dunk & Egg—a series with three published novellas, including The Hedge Knight—is planned to have between six and twelve novellas, though Martin hasn’t released any additional novellas since 2010. However, the author has given plot outlines to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner Ira Parker.

Some Stories Write Themselves

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Egg And Horse

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Martin revealed the inspiration behind The Hedge Knight and the wider Dunk & Egg series.

Martin explains that he was contacted by Robert Silverberg, who was compiling an anthology called Legends, which was planned to feature a story from each of the biggest names in fantasy writing, in the late 1990s.

Legends: Short Novels by the Masters of Modern Fantasy features stories by George R.R. Martin, Stephen King, Terry Goodkind, Robert Silverberg, Ursula K. Le Guin, Raymond E. Feist, Terry Pratchett, Tad Williams, Anne McCaffrey and Robert Jordan.

Thank The Seven, Game Of Thrones Books Won’t End The Same Way As The Show

Martin promises that The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring won’t end the same way.

“Silverberg contacted me and said, ‘We’d like one of your fantasy stories,’ and I agreed to do a story for him… The parameters of Legends were that it had to be original, and it had to take place in the world you had,” Martin explained.

“I had the idea that I wanted to write a prequel so that I would set it before A Game of Thrones started, and I wanted to write it about a tournament,” Martin continued. “Dunk and Egg came from somewhere. I had to figure out who starred in this… people from Game of Thrones weren’t born yet. At least for me, there are some stories that write themselves almost. They come alive, and you think of them every day, and you dream about them at night. This story… and the characters Dunk and Egg really came alive on me.”

In a previous interview, Martin has also said he drew inspiration from the 1953 Richard Thorpe film Ivanhoe. The inspirations are easily found in Ivanhoe, as the film features a tournament, a mystery knight and a trial-by-combat.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ fifth episode will air on February 15.
