Overwatch 2’s Anran Voice Actor Also Doesn’t Like The Redesign

Overwatch 2’s Anran Voice Actor Also Doesn’t Like The Redesign

Overwatch 2 recently went through a big rebranding, after which it’s just called Overwatch. Along with dropping the ‘2’, five new heroes will be dropped all at once tomorrow. While this rebranding is already working for the game, with its player count skyrocketing, The community is currently debating the “Kirikofication” of one of the new characters, Anran.

The crux of it is that Anran’s in-game build looks quite different from the one shown in the cinematic. She looks a lot more like Juno and Kiriko, losing a lot of her unique facial traits. The community has been pushing Blizzard to make Anran’s face look like the original cinematic version. Anran voice actor Fareeha Anderson has chimed in on the debate, saying she feels the same way.

Anran Herself Wants To Be Redesigned

Speaking in a video posted to Twitter, Anderson said that she had to “mourn” the version of Anran between the cinematic and the in-game design. She said she took some time before voicing her opinion because she wanted to address the topic, but, at the same time, didn’t want to step on the developers’ toes.

“I got to mourn Anran between the design I had hoped for for her and the design we ended up with, because I think in her comic and her cinematic, Elemental Kin, there was a precedent set by it,” said Anderson. “There was an unspoken promise that said, ‘We’re going to challenge the beauty standards plaguing and ransacking media these days.’ Right? The ozempic chic, the contour your nose, you have no nose, the tiniest nose. And, I think because of that precedent people feel understandably let down.”

I’ve Played Overwatch’s Five New Heroes, And They’re A Bold Leap Forward For The Hero Shooter

I went hands-on with Overwatch’s new heroes, and here’s why Season One might be the game’s boldest update yet.

She added that Overwatch has the reputation of being a “trailblazer” at challenging traditional beauty standards and what it looks like to be heroic. However, she pointed out that “the result we got says something else. It says something that leaves a bad taste in our mouths. It’s not the bold, optimistic swing that we know Overwatch to make.”

Speaking about Anran’s in-game look, Anderson said it doesn’t look like it matched her personality. “She looks like the younger sibling, she looks more docile, somehow, as a fire hero.” She said that this is an important debate to be having. “This is a hill worth dying on. It’s worth speaking on. Because I believe the more we speak up about the things that truly matter to us, the more we’ll see ourselves reflected in the world around us.”

“I want you to know that I shared all of this with the dev team. Not only that, I was encouraged to be as open and honest as possible, to not hold anything back,” Anderson concluded.
