The Outer Worlds 2 Fans Don’t Get Why Obsidian Is Prioritising Avowed

A recent article from Bloomberg revealed that out of the three games Obsidian Entertainment released last year, only Grounded 2 met sales expectations. Both The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed were in development for over six years, and both failed to meet Microsoft’s sales expectations.

At the conclusion of the article, author Jason Schreier writes, “Obsidian’s plan for the next few years is to work on projects big and small—completely new games and added content for The Outer Worlds 2 and Grounded 2—and space out their releases. It isn’t working on a third Outer Worlds game but does plan to keep making games in the Avowed universe…”

Obsidian Lead Admits Releasing Three Games In One Year Was Not A Success Story But “The Result Of Things Going Wrong”

Grounded 2 was the only one of the three that met expectations.

While I don’t think anyone expected Obsidian to immediately commit to a third Outer Worlds game, the finality of the statement has worried fans of the series. They’re also unsure why Obsidian is pursuing more Avowed games, considering both games sold poorly and, at the very least, the original Outer Worlds game was a success for the studio.

Fantasy Versus Sci-Fi

“Why on Earth would they make an Avowed 2?” writes Suspicious-Sound-249 in a thread about the article. “The first one sold worse than The Outer Worlds 1, and the sequel to that couldn’t even break 1 million copies sold at the 3-month mark post-launch. Avowed 2 is basically guaranteed to be a massive flop, unless they reveal something absolutely mind-blowing. I have no hopes of it being successful.”

The article technically says “games in the Avowed universe,” which doesn’t preclude Pillars of Eternity, or even the Pillars of Eternity: Tactics game that veteran game director Josh Sawyer has been pushing for internally for some time.

Josh Sawyer has publicly stated that he would only be willing to make Pillars of Eternity 3 if the game had a Baldur’s Gate 3-level budget. It’s unlikely that Microsoft and Obsidian would greenlight such an expensive project.

“I finished Avowed to give it a fair shake, and the late game is incredibly tedious and boring. Definitely not worth anyone’s time and I feel soured on the franchise,” adds Literally_A_Brick.

From my perspective, both Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 suffer from similar issues. An open world that feels lifeless between objective markers, and quest design that doesn’t evolve past killing groups of enemies or fetching an item.

We’ll have to wait and see what Obsidian’s next project is when it’s officially confirmed, but we know the studio never wants a repeat of 2025, when it released three games in the same calendar year.
