Baldur’s Gate 3: Best Bows

Baldur’s Gate 3: Best Bows

Building a ranged character in Baldur’s Gate 3 can seem simple on the surface by just picking up the ranged weapon with the highest enchantment bonus, but with the hundreds of options and unique effects found in all corners of the map, there is always a weapon that can keep you resetting your stats just to accommodate it.

Although not all ranged weapons are equally usable across all classes and proficiencies, all of them can be used by at least one member of your party to ensure they get the most damage potential possible. However, there is a lot to consider when choosing your next favorite ranged weapon.

Updated January 31, 2026 by Ben Jessey: Baldur’s Gate 3 is still a very popular game that is played by plenty of people. Therefore, we thought we’d return to our list of the best ranged weapons in that game and add a few more gems.

Spellthief

Spells and bows don’t generally go together in Baldur’s Gate 3, but they do when you’re using the Spellthief. This is because when you land a Critical Hit with this bow, you automatically recover a Spell Slot.

Incredible Baldur’s Gate 3 Exploits We Hope Never Get Patched

Work smarter, not harder.

You can only get one per Short Rest, meaning you can’t exploit it. However, it is still a nice effect to have on your bow if you like to utilize both spells and traditional ranged weaponry. It also makes it unique compared to most other weapons out there. You can buy it from Arron at The Hollow.

Titanstring Bow

The Titanstring Bow is a longbow with a unique bonus. That bonus is a boost to your damage depending on your character’s strength. So, if you’re someone who has put a lot of points into strength, then you’re going to deal significant damage with this thing.

Of course, on the other hand, if you give it to a weakling, then there isn’t much benefit to this weapon. Therefore, how good this weapon truly is depends on how you use it. Yet, if you want to use it at all, you need to buy it from Brem in the Zhentarim Basement or Lann Tarv in Moonrise Towers.

Giantbreaker

When you call a weapon ‘Giantbreaker,’ you’re setting certain expectations for it. After all, with that title, you should realistically be able to take out numerous giants with the thing. Whether you can do that is debatable.

What isn’t debatable, though, is that this is an exceptional weapon. The main thing it does is potentially inflict Reeling, which can be very useful in battle. Along with that, it’s just a generally effective crossbow that you can buy from Brem in the Zhentarim Basement.

Joltshooter

If you just look at the in-game icon for the Joltshooter, you kind of know what to expect. This is a weapon that is infused with lightning. To be more specific, it generates lighting charges when you use it, which means you get a boost to your attack rolls, and with several charges, you can deal some significant lighting damage.

What makes it even better is that you can get it early in the game since you receive it for rescuing Counsellor Florrick from the burning building in Act One.

Vicious Shortbow

When you have the Vicious Shortbow equipped, any Critical Hit you land boosts the damage you do with your bow by seven. What’s interesting is that the Critical Hit doesn’t have to be achieved with the Vicious Shortbow. So, you can hit someone with a sword and boost the power of your bow in the process. With some well-thought-out attacks, you can really get the most out of this effect.

Unfortunately, it isn’t the easiest weapon to get your hands on since you need to go through the Murder Tribunal and become an Unholy Assassin before getting the bow from Echo of Abazigal.

Crossbow Of Arcane Force

Crossbow bolts and arrows can hurt a lot. However, what is even more deadly is Arcane energy. It just so happens that the Crossbow of Arcane Force can be infused with Arcane Energy. As a result, you deal extra Force damage with every attack, making them more effective in general.

Sadly, it isn’t a crossbow that is easily accessible. After all, it is only carried by a Githyanki named Raider G’r’ath, who can be found at the Githyanki Creche.

Hellfire Hand Crossbow

Astarion holding the Hellfire Hand Crossbow in Baldur's Gate 3.

This +2 hand crossbow is ideal for rogues as its main ability is inflicting Burning on targets while hidden or invincible, which deals additional fire damage every turn, and rogues can stealth attack every turn, making the burning effect last as long as you keep hitting your targets.

The crossbow also gives you a free casting of Scorching Ray, which also uses its Hellstalker ability to inflict Burning, and since it casts the spell at third level automatically, you get four rays instead of three. To get the Hellfire Hand Crossbow, you have to defeat Yurgir inside the Gauntlet of Shar, which is a tough fight.

Gontr Mael

Astarion wielding the Gontr Mael in Baldur's Gate 3.

Gontr Mael is a legendary longbow with a +3 enchantment and the opportunity to get a free casting of Guiding Bolt on every weapon attack made with it, which triples its base damage and gives advantage on any next attack against it.

It also comes with an improved version of the Haste spell, which prevents the lethargic effect after it ends but can only be cast on the wielder. You can get Gontr Mael by defeating the steel watcher titan inside the Steel Watch Foundry.

Blightbringer

Astarion equipped with Blightbringer in Baldur's Gate 3.

Blightbringer is a unique bow in that it increases the damage potential against gnomes and dwarfs, which is pretty situational but will always give you specific targets in humanoid combats. Where this weapon shines is that critical hits made with it will cast Slow on enemies, which slows movement speed, lowers armor class, removes reactions, and more.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, you can also stack effects that lower the critical range of weapon attacks, making this Slow effect happen more often. You can buy Blightbringer at Danthelon’s Dancing Axe shop in Wyrm’s Crossing.

Ne’er Misser

Ne'er Misser on the back of Wyll in Baldur's Gate 3.

As the name implies, Ne’er Misser is a +1 hand crossbow that comes with a free, third level casting of Magic Missile, which deals 5d4 force damage and automatically hits the target regardless of AC. On top of that, normal attacks made with it deal an additional 1d6 force damage, which is a useful damage type as it can break objects and walls easily.

Ne’er Misser is likely a weapon that most players will never find, as it involves finding a way to avoid killing a Zhentarim slaver when you first find her. You can buy or loot Ne’er Misser from Roah Moonglow in Moonrise Towers if she survives the goblin camp in Act One.
